Found this NY Times article, dated Wednesday, April 22, 1884: "CRUSHED TO DEATH CLEVELAND, Ohio, April 21.--Ludwig Statler, a German, aged 38 years, employed at the large soap works of R. Thompson Co., at Brooklyn, this county, was crushed to death in the elevator yesterday morning. He was engaged in hoisting a number of heavy barrels to the third story, and in some unaccountable manner he slipped and his body fell over the edge of the elevator platform. Before he could recover himself the elevator descended, catching him in the middle of the back and crushing him terribly. The injured man was removed and a physician called. It was found that Statler's back was broken in three places and his thigh crushed to pieces. He died while the physician was making the examination. He leaves a widow and four children." David Statler
