From: <r.toothman@worldnet.att.net> Re: Statler family 24 Oct 2002 The discrepant stories about the Statlers were what inspired me to straighten them out. Stephen, born c1720?, probably somewhere in Germany/, + in Fayette Co, PA, 1783/84; the only record, late, of his wife, calls her Susanna but it's not known if he had one wife or two. There is a gap in his children's ages that always suggested to me he might have been married twice. Father of: 1. Catharine, born c1740, married George HILEY 2. Jacob, born c1742/45?, + 1778 (killed by Indians); married __, whose name is not given in any source known to me. 3. John, c1742/45-bef 1820?; md Eve BRYERLY, widow of THORN, and lived near Blacksville; moved, with all of his family, Licking Co OH, very early 1800s 4. Joseph, born c1750?, reportedly killed by Indians but no contemporary record of it; if so, unmarried and no known issue 4. Michael, c1760?-1842?; it's not clear from the records how many Michael's there are, though it looks to me as if there may be two of them -- the details are hazy to me. Married __ (I don't remember the given name but they were the parents of Hannah, who md James CUNNINGHAM; maybe also the Michael who md Polly BOLD c1805 but I'm not sure of that; moved to OH 5. George, 1760s-1836 md Elisabeth SMEATHERS in KY, where he moved abt 1797 (George inherited the land of Stephen, which included Statlers Fort; this is the same tract later owned by SHRIVER, which CORE describes as one of the best on Dunkard Creek. Jacob's tract lay just below this one. 6. Stephen, 1770-1856, moved to KY, married Rhoda PIGMAN, and was JP and sheriff in Ohio Co, KY Jacob, probably the oldest son of Stephen, was killed by Indians. He is not named in the will of Stephen Statler but it is stated in the Statler vs Core/Hiley lawsuit in Monongalia that Stephen (not named) was the grandfather of John STATLER son of Jacob (George STATLER, the son of Stephen, is named and is called "Uncle" to John) and I see no reason to doubt it. Jacob's wife died, per the suit, while their oldest son John was still a minor, and her name is not given anywhere. The lawsuit had to do with the land to which John was entitled as the heir at law of his father. He recites that his father was killed by Indians "many years ago" and that George HILEY, who he stops just short of saying was his uncle though it is strongly implied that HILEY was a family connection, had a survey made for John as heir of Jacob but appropriated part of the land to his own use and he or his heir sold it to one of the CORE men. George SNYDER was finally bonded as guardian to John STATLER and obtained another survey, which included all of the land to which John was entitled, and the purpose of the suit was to negate HILEY's sale to CORE of a part of it. Eventually STATLER and CORE agreed the case out of court and STATLER took the land, 400 acres in all. This is the same John whose dates are usually given as 1733-1826 (or so), but the dates are wrong. He says that he was a minor at the time of his father's death in 1778 and for many years afterward, and there is no reason to doubt this. He would have been laughed out of court if he came in, aged almost 70, and presented the case that he did. He was actually born c1772, it would appear, and was age 21 by 1794 -- but probably not much over 21 at that time. I've seen a photograph of his tombstone, which appears to show he + 1826, age 93 years but the first digit of the age is badly damaged, as if it has been chipped with a sharp object, and I believe it should read _53_years. If I remember correctly, the stone shows him +1826 but his estate went into probate in 1825, so the date of death is probably a year off. MITTONG says he md Eve ROBERTS, but that is also wrong. MITTONG badly confused the STATLER family and he has been followed closely by CORE and others -- another purpose for my article! Evidently Mr WILSON saw deeds from John and Eve (BRYERLY) STATLER in Monongalia and presumed that all references to a John were to the same person, which they are not. The John who md Eve was the older man, and made a mark like a $ tipped over on its side. John STATLER the son of Jacob wrote his name and had a very distinctive handwriting, as well as spelling style, that are easy to spot if you've seen them once. The older John had land at Pentress and Blacksville, adjoining George HILEY's home place. At least some of this came eventually to Adam BROWN. A manuscript I received after finishing that draft established beyond question that Joseph STATLER, c1773/4?-1870s, of Brown Co, OH, was a younger brother of John STATLER (of Jacob). This Joseph married Margaret MILLER and left WV in the early 1800s. The MS indicates that there were sisters but does not ID them, and they didn't figure in any of the litigation over the land because John, as the oldest son, was the heir at law to his father's real estate. (The MS says that Joseph was the oldest son, but this is contradicted by the facts. John, son of Jacob, was the heir at law and was the oldest son. Since only the eldest son inherited land under the circumstances, there is no direct record of the rest of the family.) John md, abt 1805 or 1806, to Elisabeth, probably MYERS though his family record does not say so. (The family record, in his own handwriting, is in the Monongalia court records at Morgantown, pinned to the guardianships for his children.) Elisabeth evidently had a son Peter MYERS prior to her marriage. The land John inherited from Jacob was sold by his children after his death. His sons were Jacob (m Elis WALKER) and John; all the other children were daughters, and one or two of them died unmarried but most survived. Except for John (son of Jacob), nearly all the rest of the family left WV pretty early. The only one who is known to me to have stayed here was Christina STATLER, the daughter of John and Eve (BRYERLY), who married Adam BROWN and lived at Pentress. Her parentage has been much disputed in the past but I was lucky enough to find the documents which prove that she was the daughter of John (who signs by the tipped-over $ mark). John gave evidence, shortly before returning to OH, in a lawsuit involving Christina's son John BROWN and stated his relationship there, as well as signing with his usual mark. Again, I would recommend to y STATLER article, which does not include the info about Joseph, brother of John (of Jacob), noted above, because this came to me after the last completed draft was finished. It doesn't go beyond the children of John (c1772-1825/6), and there is still some discrepancy as to the # of Michael's around (I think there are 2: an older one who was son of Stephen and a younger who may well have been a son of Jacob, but I could be wrong on this and the local records just don't give the answer). Otherwise, there is nothing in it that I know to be wrong, though it needs fine-tuning and the data on Joseph STATLER of OH needs to be worked into the story. (But the data on Joseph is also extremely incorrect on some points, and some of it is outright nonsense -- particularly the story of Joseph, his father Jacob, and their encounters with Indians, nearly all of which is fictional.) The previous sources on this family were some fairly brief mentions in WILEY, which are partly incorrect; the page or two in WILSON's book on the MITTONG family, which is rather garbled; some notes not directly relevant to STATLER but involving them in Glenn LOUGH's book; and CORE, who uses all of the preceding. I'm not even related to this family! Twenty years ago Susie JONES mentioned them to me as a family who were a major mess to untangle, and eventually I set about to see what could actually be done with them, just as a project. I had had some correspondence from the BROWN researchers, for whom I found the BROWN-STATLER connection above, and one of them tipped me to the torn-out Bible record of John STATLER's children. And then a book I randomly picked up at WVU Library had the clues I needed to find the "other" children of Stephen Sr, who went to KY. Some work in the county records cleared up much of the rest. After abt 1805, the STATLER family is easy, since there is only one, that of John (son of Jacob), and from his 2 sons come all the ones now here of the name,Rick <<<<<DOES THIS HELP ANYONE.....fr Daniel Statler, Florida >dstateler@mindspring.com or dstateler@sprynet.com Fr-Cuzz'n Carl Descendants of Stephen (Stradler) Stateler 1 Stephen (Stradler) Stateler .... 2 Michael Cornelius Stateler, Senior 1757 - 1842 ....... +May Dunlap ....... 3 Joseph Statler ....... 3 George Statler .... *2nd Wife of Michael Cornelius Stateler, Senior: ....... +Mary (Polly) Bold 1785 - 1874 ....... 3 Lavina Stateler 1807 - .......... +William Christian Neilberger ....... 3 Michael Cornelius Stateler, Junior 1810 - 1886 .......... +Sidney Neiberger - 1847 .......... 4 Chester N.
