LD Stateler is Lemuel Stateler a fairly easy name to track. I first noticed him in the 1850 California Census: Lemuel Stateler: Sacramento page 187 age 24 born Ohio Then in 1860 he is in Marshall Illinois with a wife and 3 children. This ties him the the Marshall County Statelers. Jacob's age in the 1880 census is ten years off. In 1840 he is in Marshall County, Lyon Prect. age 40 to 50 In 1850 he is in Marshall County age 54 born Ohio. So in 1880 he should be about 83-84. There appear to be three brothers in Marshall County IL David bought 3 parcels of federal land starting in 1834. According to the 1850-1880 census he was born about 1806/7 in Ohio In 1880 he had a brother Martin living with him age 83 I don't find Martin with any children. So David, Martin and probably Jacob are brothers born 1796 to 1807 I believe the most likely father for them is John Jr who living in Licking County Ohio. and John Jr is very likely the son of John also of Licking County Now to this list: "Children of Stephen Statler and an unk wife [or wives], order of birth undetermined were: 1.John Statler, m. Eve [Bryerly] Thorn***this Jacob's father..?? 2. Stephen Stateler, m. Rhoda Pigman 3. Michael Stateler, m. Sarah --. 4. George Statler m Elizabeth Cecelia Smeathers 5. Catherine Statler, m. -- Hiley. 6. Jacob Statler, m.--------.*********" It comes from the research of Rick Toothman. I am speaking a little soon, but I am pretty sure that: "1.John Statler, m. Eve [Bryerly] Thorn" is about the same age as Stephen who died in 1783 So is "6. Jacob Statler, m.--------.*********" this is the man who was killed by indians in 1778. Look at the period the children were born Michael was born about 1760 George was born about 1766 Stephen was born about 1760 (he was in the 1850 census) "1."John married a women who was widowed about 1765. So I assume his children were born before 1785 I believe his son probable John Jr. was born about 1774 And another probable Jacob was born about 1773 see the Statler/Stetler/Stotler newsletter 1986 #3 page 8. "6." Jacob has probable sons Joseph born 1770 and John born 1771 to 1774 These two were young orphans in 1783 when Stephen died. It makes no sense to me that if they were his grandsons they wouldn't be mentioned in the will. At this time I would construct what I call Group 10 this way Common father perhaps named Stephen had: Stephen born before 1740 died 1783 John born 1730 to 1740 Jacob born 1740-1750 died 1778 I realize I haven't documented this information and I will do so later. If you haven't read the "Statler/Stetler/Stotler Newsletters" they are online at the Statler Webpage under Family Documents. There is quite a bit on Group 10 in various issues. http://www.jcn1.com/mabccs/
The Groups I used in the newletters are well defined in the first issue, March 1986 even maps. http://www.jcn1.com/mabccs/ Under Family Documents Group 10 is from Monongalia County, (West) Virginia. I made an error on the birth date of Stephen Stateler, brother of George. In the 1850 census District 1 Ohio County, Kentucky page 33 dwelling and household 464: Stephen Stateler age 80 born Penn. Rhoda Stateler age 72 born Maryland Elosa Taylor age 52 born Kentucky Susan Taylor age 21 born Kentucky Mary Pigman age 66 born Maryland And in dwelling and household 465: Ignacius Stateler age 46 Seny Stateler age 45 Ann Stateler age 16 charlotte Stateler age 14 Marion Stateler age 11 male Sarah Stateler age 8 Virgil Stateler age 3 Lucy Stateler age 1 all born in Kentucky So Stephen was born about 1770. This means he was only about 14 when his father's Stephen will was probated. I looked at the Orphan Court records for Fayette County PA, to see if a guardian had been appointed but did not find anything. The point of my earlier post on this information is that Rick Toothman did an excellent job of digging up facts on this family and then not such a good job on analysis. Rich Toothman's articles are on the Statler web page under Family Documents: http://www.jcn1.com/mabccs/
