    3. Hi! I've got a few pictures of the Statler Cemetery at the Statler Family website on the Photo Album page. 1. Re: [STATLER] family tales

    3. Hi Brandy, What you have is a very common family tradition. There are stories in many families about brothers usually three, who came from Europe. Does it happen that way? Sometimes, much more often, a nuclear family (father, mother and children) emigrate along with other relatives, in-laws, and fellow church members and neighbors. Some of the passenger lists show Statler/Stettler/Stadler men coming as single men. In my Statler research I have found "the brother" story associated with the group of Statlers from Loudoun County, VA. In actuality the father of the brothers was there. The father was Abraham, sons John, Jacob and Abraham. The family connections of the various Statler families is something I have been researching a long time. I have looked at the names of neighbors in America and and others on the same ship. I have found the different groups occasionally associated with some of the same surnames, but not enough to make a connection back to Europe. I have mapped out the towns in Europe from which the known neighbors and in-law emigrated, It looks like a map of the Rhine Valley: From around Mannheim up the river to Canton Bern, Switzerland about thirty mile either side of the river. Currently that land is in three countries, Germany, France, and Switzerland. Hard to zone in on that.

    3. Thanks to Mary Alice and David's website my family was able to find the background of our family with names and everything. My family is very greatful for this. I've unfortunatley had to back off on the studying I've done on the family so it's been great hearing from all of you. I do have a semi silly question though: A story was passed on to my father and his sister and brothers saying that there were 2-3 "Statler" (quotes to account for the variation of spelling) brothers that came stateside in the beginning. "One brother went north and one went south" and some versions have a third brother going down the center of the US, this accounting for the various cluster locations of the statler clans in the US. Have any of you also heard this story? If so, were any of you able to determine the accuracy of it? - Brandy Statler Long __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Hi Jack, I am also a descendant of Casper Statler through his son John. I have Andrew as married to Sophia Wagner who died in 1859. According to the 1880 Census Andrew and Elonora had three children. Loretta born 1864, Cora Born 1869, and Lulu Jenetta born 1877. I also have that they had a son named Samuel who married Ethel Goughnour. I have also been to the Statler Cemetery but didn't record many tombstone. I do have a picture of Casper's but I can't read it. A transcription I have says 18 August 1743 to 12 April 1798. I can see my picture of Samuel's stone and it does say son of Jasper. The transcription I have says son of Joseph. Dates for Samuel Jan. 15, 1776 to May 17, 1860 There is another transcription online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pasomers/cemetery/sh/statler.htm Now to the spelling When working on genealogy, a shift of thinking about spelling really helps. Wasn't much of a problem for me since I wasn't such a great speller. Spelling really varies, if you look at the transcription of the cemetery you will see Statler, Stetler and Stotler. All the same family. CASPER is the usual German spelling. Jasper is the English translation, in some records it is Gasper the French version. And most puzzling it is sometime Joseph, which I believe was a guess at an English translation. That spelling is especially associated with Casper's father-in-law Casper Walter. In the first Newletter I published in March 1986 page 3, I go into more detail on spelling. The Newsletters are on the Statler Family website under Family Documents: http://www.jcn1.com/mabccs/ Sandy

    3. Nena: I have just started to work on my Statler family connections and am new to this mailing list' so bare with me, please. My great grandfather was Andrew Statler. His second wife was Eleanora Ling ( aka Ellen, or Elinora--- note: Eleanora is the spelling on her tombstone ). They had one child, my grandmother Lola (Statler) Chapman. Lola and her mother Eleanora were survivors of the 1889 Johnstown, Pa flood. My mother took me to the Statler cemetery in Shade Twp. Somerset Co.Pa.about 1946. I am in two pictures that were taken of tombstones there. The one is of Andrew's headstone and states that he died July 27, 1881 at the age of 65yrs 4 ms & 17 days. Which agrees with March 10, 1816 as date of birth. I see Andrew's first wife listed as Sophia Garber, but I have another unconfirmed name of Sophia Sorber as his first wife. Any help here? Now here is the item of interest. The second photo, per my mother, is the headstone of my GG grandfather Samuel Statler. It states very clearly: "Samuel son of Jasper"( NOT Casper) Statler. The years are hard to read but the month and days are readable. b. Jan 15, (177? the last number isn't clear but it looks like it is 1778) d. July 17, 18?? ( it looks like it is 1869 ). If 1869 and 1778 that would have made him 91???? The question is: Was there a Jasper or was the headstone wrong and it should have said Casper? Any thoughts on Jasper or confirmation of the dates? 3. I was going over my email and discovered my response to Carrol Ann did not go through. Here it is Yes, I know this Emanuel is not the son of Samuel d 1804, I believe he is the son of Henry and Kesiah Ferrell, they were in Brothers Valley Twp. Somerset County in the 1850 and there was a child Emanuel age 2 in the household. As for Jacob there is a Jacob Statler 79 born PA in the 1880 census in Berrien County Michigan. 3. Dear Sandy, The scenario I submitted on the Stephen <1710> STRADLER STATELER(The Immigrant) line is a reasonable possiblity based on the various email I have received from the STATLER Rootsweb email list, information from other sites and information that I had from other sources. I just tried to tie all the information together and present it in a possible descendancy. It can be added to, or corrected, reasonably, as further information comes to light. You have now added that:: John <1742> STATELER's son, John <1774> STATELER had 5 boys and 3 girls as per the 1820 US Census, Licking County, Ohio. I have shown only one son, John Jr.<1794> as that is all I had seen in the incoming emails. I will now add to my records, the 1820 Census info on 5 sons & 3 daughters. About your opinion that Jacob <1741> STATELER is a brother to Stephen <1710>STRADLER STATELER(The Immigrant): I included him as a son to Stephen (The Immigrant) because, in the Court case; John (c1772) STATELER vs CORE/HILEY in Monongalia County; They speak of John STATELER son of Jacob <1741> STATELER and Grandson of Stephen <1710> STATELER. They also speak of "Uncle George" <1760> STATLER, son of Stephen <1710> STATELER who also inherited some land from Stephen<1710>STATELER If we all keep digging, perhaps the possible descendancy I have submitted can be made more complete and corrected if neccessary. 3. Hi James, Good Work. I am a bit of a dissenting voice in that I believe that your 2. Jacob and 2.John are more likely to be brothers of Stephen than sons. This might affect someone researching earlier in Europe for this family, if we ever get that far. But the Y Chromosome should be the same. I need to line out all my reasoning, that will take more time. Licking County Johns: 2.John's son 3.John IS John Jr in the taxlists of early 1800s Licking (Fairfield) County Ohio. In the 1820 census John Jr. by then just "John" had 5 younger males and 3 younger female. My candidates for sons, by that I mean, possible but unproven a.Jacob b about 1793/4 moved to Marshall Co. IL b.Martin b about 1797 " " " " c.Joseph b about 1811 moved to Hancock County OH d.David b about 1806/7 moved to Marshall Co. IL e.Sylvester b. about 1817 moved to MN Males One under 10 , Two10-16 and Two 18-26 One over 45 listed in census My list: Two under 10, One 10-16 and Two 18-26 and John born before 1775 Also, where did the name May Dunlap come from for Michael's first wife? Rick Toothman thought it might be Sarah from some court records. 1. [STATLER] Cleveland Necrology Database
    2. David Statler
    3. Hi All... In case you're needing something to do this weekend, here's a database I came across that some of you might find interesting. It's the Cleveland, OH Necrology Database. It's located at: http://www.cpl.org/LinksLibrary.asp?FormMode=DBSubCategory&ID=178&CatID=3 (Note: this link may wrap, so be sure to paste the full link in your browser.) This link takes to you to Cleveland Library's Database links page, so just scroll down until you see the Necrology Database. According to the site: "This database was produced from a microfilmed copy of an alphabetical card file containing local cemetery records and newspaper death notices gathered by the staff of the Cleveland Public Library. A small collection of records from the Cleveland Bureau of Vital Statistics and some indexed items from the Annals of Cleveland were also part of the original card file and are also included in the database. The newspaper source material consists of paid notices which were published in the following newspapers: Cleveland Plain Dealer, 1850-1975, the Cleveland Herald, 1833, 1847-1848, 1876, 1878-1879 and the Cleveland Press, August 16, 1941 - 1975." Doing some quick searches myself, I saw 2 Statler's, a Stotler, 6 Stetler's, 3 Stettler's, but no Stateler's. I didn't check any other variations yet. Have a great weekend Everyone!! David Statler

    3. I took a look at the 1880 census index on the Monroe County GenWeb page. In Seneca Twp found a Nicklas STALDER and a Cristopher Stalder. Looks like they are Stalder/Stalter families, a name invented merely to frustrate Statler researchers. No, it really is a name, and there are quite a few of them in Ohio. Sandy
