    1. [STATLER] Emigration
    2. Sandra Jones Hall
    3. One thing I have often wondered about all my ancestors is: what got them on the boats to America? I put myself in their place and believe I would have been scared. In the case of our Statler emigrants, they were to get on a ship owned and run by Englishmen who to them were foreigners. The farmers and tradesmen of the Rhineland probably never met and Englishman. They must of heard from previous emigrants that the voyage could be very difficult. As bad as life can get, the prospect of going to an unknown place takes some courage. Obviously they overcame their fear. My efforts trace the paths of these people are mostly to satisfy my own curiosity but partly to honor their courage. I plan to use conventional genealogy as well as DNA to find the origins of these people. No one is obliged to help who doesn’t wish to. I do thank those who have volunteered their DNA, as of today I have six volunteers and results will start coming in soon. I’ll let you know when I get my web site up. Sandy

    1. [STATLER] DNA-101-mtDNA
    2. Nena Smothers
    3. Fr the Hill mail list..thought I would share so you all can get some grasp on the mtDNA and what it really means. DNA 101....LOL I also know that Oxford Ancestors located in England are slightly cheaper on the mtDNA..Nena Many of you have asked "Why does the Hill DNA Project only test males? Why can't females be tested?" Well, they can but it is extremely complicated and for this reason, I have been hesitant to get into it. However, I will consider doing it if there is enough interest out there. Also,it isn't cheap. Family Tree DNA charges $179, but if you could see the number of tests the lab (Univ. of Arizona) does, and how complicated they are, you would wonder how they could do it for that amount. So, if you have not deleted this email at this point, you probably want to know exactly what kind of testing is involved and what it can do for you. I find it most interesting that each of us inherit an exact genetic copy of certain DNA molecules from our ancestors. Men inherit the DNA found in their y-chromosomes (in the nucleus of each cell), which is passed from father to son for hundreds of generations. Women inherit the DNA found in the area outside the nucleus of each cell, called Mitochondrial DNA, often abbreviated to "mtDNA." This DNA is passed from our mothers to each of her children (male and females) for hundreds of generations. However, only the female passes this genetic material to her children. In other words, the mtDNA the male inherits from his mother is not passed on to his children. How does this help you (a female) in family history research? Just as our paternal lineage (father to son) can be identified by the genetic code in the y-chromosome DNA, our maternal lineage (mother to daughter) can be identified by the genetic code found in the mtDNA. However, one major "fly in the ointment" with mtDNA testing is that the surname of the female changes each generation. With this in mind, it appears to me that there are two basic approaches to using mtDNA testing: (1)through random efforts, and (2) through family history research. In a random approach, a female takes the mtDNA test and hopes to match someone already in the mtDNA database, or hopes that someone will come along at a later date and match her mtDNA. Although the chances of this happening are somewhat remote, it can happen. If it does, then they compare family histories with each other and hope to establish a connection somewhere along the mother-daughter line. In the family history approach, you have to rely heavily on your family history and primary sources of information you have acquired. This is useful in situations where a female has come across another female researching one of her family lines and they think they may have a common female ancestor somewhere in the family tree, but can't prove it. In these situations, mtDNA testing will either prove or disprove their suspected genetic connection. Just always remember that you are looking for a connection in a direct line from mother > mother's mother mother's mother's mother, > etc. In the above situations, you (a female) are researching your maternal mtDNA connections. However, since a male also inherits his mother's mtDNA, you (a female) could also use the above scenarios to test your father's mother's mtDNA line (by having your father's mtDNA tested). Or, if you are a male, you could test your mother's mtDNA line in situations where you don't have a sister and your mother is no longer living (using the mtDNA inherited from your mother). By now, I am sure that I have confused some of you. If there are enough people (female & male) interested in mtDNA testing, I am willing to revise my website and make arrangements with Family Tree DNA in Houston, TX to process you requests for testing. If there isn't much interest, then it isn't worth the effort. For those of you who would like to research this further, just type in mtDNA in you favorite search engine and you will find more information than you will have time to read. Here are three pretty good websites to get you started: http://www.electricscotland.com/familytree/magazine/febmar2003/dna1.htm http://www.as.wvu.edu/~kgarbutt/Matinherit.html http://www.stromsborg.com/geneticsmtdna.htm Best wishes to all,E. Ray Hill http://www.livingston.net/hilldna (DNA website) Note: Please don't ask me a bunch of technical questions about this. I am still going through the learning phase myself and probably can't answer most of them. You can get most of the information you need from the above suggested websites. Just send me a short email to let me know if you ARE interested. If I get 20 to 25 people who are interested, I will probably go forward with the project. GROUP RATE POSSIBLE I have just been informed by Family Tree DNA that if we can get 20 or more people participating in mtDNA testing, we can negotiate a lower rate than $179. I guess it all depends on how many people and how good a negotiator I am. :-) Also, any male participant now in the Hill DNA Project can use his DNA samples already on file with Family Tree DNA, and will only have to pay a fee of $100 to test his maternal line. (Note:I think I may also be able to negotiate a lower rate on this.)E. 3. Now that you mention the DNA piece Virginia......I feel it sad if that was the case! We have a Smothers DNA project in progress, with already 3 results which have just been wonderfully outstanding! Without this bit of info....we might not know now where to look for our illusive 5th generation grandfather to our Pappy Smeathers...and OHHHH, we have looked so long. Our great lst match was to my brother and a cuz in Tx from another Smothers living here in Wa, oddly....and he is fr the Smither line of PA, which I have longed kind of thought our Pappy Smeathers might be connected. The DNA match confirmed it, so now we know where to look! Its absolutely wonderful this genetic DNA! and its only for genealogy purposes too! We still have 8 more results to come in and we sit on pins and needles in anticipation! I can't say enough good things abt this wonderful new technology for us that have had road blocks on our ancestors for so long. 3. Hi Sharon, Charles A Statler had three sons , John A, Roddy S. and Lewis all born in PA. I did some checking for you. 1880 Census New Sharon, Mahaska County, Iowa F. W. STATLER age 27 born OH Drayman father born OH mother born OH Ella STATLER Wife Female age 27 born OH Keeping House both parents Nellie STATLER Dau Female W 10M IA On rootsweb's WorldConnect I found they were married 10 Feb 1875 in MIAMI, OH This checks with marriage records I have. This means that Frank is most probably a descendant of Christian Statler who came to Ohio in the early 1800s. All the Statlers in Miami County appear to be descendants of Christian If no one else can identify your Frank you need to look at the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Miami County Ohio. If Frank died after 1900 a death certificate should name his parents. That should be available from the state in which he died. Sandy

    3. Hi All! I'm forwarding this note to the mailing list since it was sent to the 'STATLER-L-request' address instead of the 'STATLER-L' address... David Statler -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Did Charles A. STATLER have a Son? Date: Wed, 22 Jan 2003 11:56:31 -0700 From: "Sharon Statler" <SharonStatler@myfamily.com> To: STATLER-L-request@rootsweb.com Dearest STATLER Cousins, I've been at the infamous "brick wall" with my STATLER ancestors for some time now. I've only been able to get as far as my ggGrandfather, Frank STATLER, b. 1852 in OH, and his wife Ella COLLINS STATLER. Since I've not been able to get past him coming from "my" direction, I decided to start taking stabs in the dark and see what I could come up with by checking out other STATLER lines that would have been born before him and see if one might lead me directly to him....well..... John STATLER, b. 1772, had a son by the name of Charles Augustus STATLER, b. 1827. Charles Augustus married Catherine AKE in "January 1852". Catherine AKE was the daughter of John AKE of Frederick Co., MD. There are no children listed for them but, my ggGrandfather, Frank STATLER, was born in "July 1852"!!! Could he be their son? He could have been born two months premature, or Catherine could have been "with child" for two months prior to their marriage in January 1852. (Hey! It happened! *lol*) I also have an "AKE" in my STATLER line. I have Mary AKE who married Peter PUTTERBAUGH, also of Frederick Co., MD., so I know I'm related to this STATLER line, but not as directly through them, as I would like to be. I want to find that solid STATLER-to-STATLER connection. Here's how my AKE-to-STATLER line comes out: 1 Peter PUTTERBAUGH, b. 1765, Frederick Co. MD + Mary AKE, b. 1775 2 John Ake PUTTERBAUGH, b. 15 May 1994, Huntingdon Co., PA + Mary Ann WISE, b. 12 Dec 1798, Huntingdon Co. PA 3 Sarah Ann PUTTERBAUGH, b. 29 Aug 1838, OH + Eli Hewue BOOMERSHINE, b. 28 Dec 1837, Versailles, Darke Co., OH 4 Christina Jane BOOMERSHINE, b. 18 Mar 1864, Darke Co., OH + Lewis C. REINHEIMER, b. IN 5 Florence Marie REINHEIMER b. 11 Feb ???? + Clyde Franklin STATLER, b. 4 Sep 1882, Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., IA (Clyde's father was Frank STATLER, b. Jul 1852 and his mother, Ella COLLINS.) Then it goes to my grandfather, Eugene Clayton STATLER and my father, Eugene Clayton STATLER, Jr., and myself. As you can see, my AKE came down through Clyde STATLER's Maternal line. But, because of the coincidence that Frank STATLER was born the very same year that Charles Augustus and Catherine were married, I have a feeling he just might be their son. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any census records showing him with his parents listed, nor any other documents. If ANYONE has anything that might sinch this connection, I'll greatly appreciate hearing from you! Trust me, I have my fingers crossed over this one. I've been searching for nearly 25 years! Waiting patiently, Sharon Statler

His first name is Thomas wife Emma Jane children Melville b1874 Winnie b 1879 Ruth b 1883 Thomas died age 82 May 20, 1928 and his wife Nov. 30,1922 both in Alameda County I would think he was a grandson of Michael and Mary Bold, the only candidate is Thomas the son of Stephen who was listed as age 8 in 1850, perhaps I read a 5 as an 8. If anyone needs proof they can get a death certificate from California.
