    3. I just have to share the news! The Lamar County [TX] Genealogical Society won several of the prizes for indexing the 1940 Census. Our team of volunteers indexed/arbitrated 560,844 records. That meant we won the Grand Prize for Overall Production for a small genealogical society. Second place behind us only indexed/arbitrated 218,296 records. In fact, we beat out many of the large societies, coming in 5th when counted against them and some of these societies had over a hundred members participating in the indexing project. The society will receive 4 one-hour Family History Library sessions of our choice, a projector, a laptop computer, an HD webcam, and an annual subscription to GoToWebinar (a webinar provider service). We also placed 2nd in the Per Capita Production contest. Because the prize for 2nd place was the same as the Overall Production prize, we will receive a $1700 Amazon gift card! We also won the May competition for the most records indexed and received a laptop for that prize. Then we won the June competition for the most records arbitrated and each member on our team will receive a goodie bag for that. All in all, we had a great time and helped get the indexing done in record time. Family Search had predicted that it would take 8 months to complete the indexing and it was completed in 4 months!! What great satisfaction we all have in helping get these records prepared for free online access. Most of the members of our genealogical society team are also members of USGenWeb, so I feel it is appropriate to share this news and do a little bragging!! Betsy

    3. Wow, impressive! Thank you for all your hard work. My local gen. society participated, but we came nowhere near your totals. Guess I can claim bragging rights for "knowing" someone in the winning society! 3. That is indeed great news! I've noticed that your society was always among the top leaders on the Society Leaderboard at https://the1940census.com/society/society-dashboard/ - you should definitely be VERY proud of your accomplishments. I love to hear this kind of great, positive news. Kudos to everyone involved! I coordinated an indexing group for the TNGenWeb. We didn't produce as much as yours did, but I was very proud to see our genweb group represent so well. We had about 50 people indexing and did about 350,000 names. I blogged about it at http://tngenweb.org/blog/tngenweb-rocked-1940-census-indexing/. From the great effort that came from that, we also now have a group of volunteers to help with future indexing projects for TNGenWeb - we are working on putting together some options now to try and continue and engage some of those that signed up for the census project. Maybe they will become longer-term genweb volunteers :-) I'm hoping you'll share with us more once you get your webinar subscription up and running - we can never have too many webinars! -- Taneya Y.
