Hi Les, I'm really sorry to hear about your mother-in-law, and I'm sending up prayers for your mom. As for your frustrating situation . . . Do your guidelines specify how a new/replacement CC is to be chosen and/or approved? I recommend that each state have such a statement in their guidelines in order to avoid situations such as the one you're experiencing. Is there a statement in your guidelines requiring any new CC to read and agree to the guidelines prior to participation in WVGenWeb? Even in the absence of these items, I would think that, in this case, you are well within your duties as State Coordinator to refuse to recognize this person as the CC for the county in question and to seek a replacement. Obviously, we need CCs in USGenWeb who are responsive, responsible team players. Good luck! One of the WV CCs apparently turned one of her counties over to another person, I first became aware of this when I received an email with a subject and text starting with: Attention: ...to whom it may concern... I almost missed this message as my SpamKiller filters did not like this subject or opening sentence. I have now written three messages to this person using the email address that he has set up for use with the county and have not received a reply. I tried writing the former CC and she has not answered either. I subscribed his mailing address to WVGEN-L according to Project rules and he promptly unsubscribed. The page does have the USGenWeb Project logo but not the WVGenWeb Project logo that the CCs voted to change to one year ago. We have always had new volunteers read the rules and guidelines that were established for the WVGenWeb Project and ask that they agree to abide by them. If this new person read the rules and guidelines, he apparently does not plan to obey them. One totally frustrated SC. Here are the requirements of the WVGenWeb Project: Requirements Overview of Requirements for WVGenWeb County and Special Project pages: Name your page __ County WVGenWeb or display WVGenWeb Special Project. Display the USGenWeb Logo. Provide a Query Page. Display your Name, Title and E-mail Address. Link all pages in your site to your index page and link your index page to the WVGenWeb state page. Subscribe to WVGen-L and the mailing list for your county. Update your site often, particularly the Query Page. As a Coordinator, you should be courteous, quick to respond and assist your visitors to the best of your ability. You aren't required to do research for your visitors but you do need to point them in the direction of finding answers. This is followed by a detailed description of each of the above rules. The full text can be seen at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvgenweb/cc-guide.htm Here are the recommendations for CCs: Recommendations 1. Provide links to neighboring counties, especially parent counties. 2. Provide addresses and links, if available, for historical and genealogical societies, courthouse and libraries for your county. 3. Provide a Surname page or list of surname researchers, a county history page, a map of your county or outline location of your county within the state of West Virginia. 4. Provide basic county history such as the date of formation, parent counties, the county seat, courthouse information, cities and towns in your county and years that records are available. 5. Provide a list of Lookup Volunteers and their sources. 6. Subscribe to the WVxxxxxx-L mailing list for the county or counties for which you administer a web site. For example, if you are the CC for Fayette County, join the WVFAYETT-L mailing list. This enables you to know what's going on in your county, to assist and direct potential and frequent visitors to your site, and to recognize the need for certain elements in your web site, i.e. a Surname page, a history page, map, etc. ยท If there is no mailing list for your county, consider creating one. Some counties are combined into one larger mailing list. For example, WV-Metro-Valley-l combines Boone, Cabell, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, Mingo, Putnam, and Wayne Counties. Subscribe to the conglomerated county list in which your county is included (if any) and observe the traffic. If you believe that there would be a lot of traffic to your county mailing list, give it a go! Bear in mind that the "If you build it, they will come" principal that worked for Kevin Costner in "Field of Dreams" may not hold water in the realm of regional mailing lists. Visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ for more information about regional mailing lists available at Rootsweb. 7. Search the net for new links to add to your county page. 8. Correct or eliminate broken links. 9. Create a "text-only" page for those visitors with slower or less powerful machines. 10. Place a copyright notice on your page. After all, its your creation. However, anything submitted by contributors remains their work. That includes queries, photographs, self-compiled data, etc., etc. You can't take it with you when you go. 11. Check your pages in the more popular browsers to ensure it looks just the way you designed it in all of them. 12. Read the USGenWeb By-Laws at http://www.usgenweb.org/official/bylaws.html Les Shockey email address = lshockey@citynet.net or wvgenweb@citynet.net RootsWeb Listowner for the SHOCKEY family discussion group.
