Someone has just pointed out to me that Amazon.com is selling "subscriptions'" to many of the genealogical societies' newletters/quarterlies/annual publications. My genealogical society's annual publication is free with a membership in the society - costing $15 (or more if they choose to give more). They are selling a subscription to the annual for $28.85. I really resent this Magazine Express, Inc. pocketing $13.85 of money that could have gone to the society. Lists all Genealogy & Heraldry publications: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/1116312/ref=br_dp__4/104-8260865-9097502 Anyone else found their genealogical society's publications there? Anyone else upset by this and/or have suggestions for how we can stop this? Betsy
It seems to me that the only way they could provide the magazine is by sending in a subscription in the person's name unless the society has a direct agreement. I will admit the apparent difference is high, but there might be other benefits that a member gets that a subscriber does not receive (admission to a library, for example). Thinking about this beyond the face of it, it might actually be a good thing for a society to get subscriptions this way. Have you ever subscribed to a magazine through some special offer (usually only for one year) and then renewed in the usual manner after that? People who get the magazine might become members at renewal, if not sooner.
