    3. About twenty years ago around this time each year email list managers and message board managers used to post messages warning everyone that after Christmas to be prepared for an inundation of new people with LOT's of questions. It seems that people would get a new computer, their first usually, and immediately start looking for their family tree. The number one thing after pornography to search for on a computer. I haven't seen a message like that in years. Back then the USGenweb was the most prominent source around. There were others that soon drifted away to wherever it is that old website go. The Couch Genweb is still around but I don't think anything has been done there for years. Anyway. Each of those new computer users was a potential CC or SC for the USGenweb. Without all those newbies out there it seems the pool has kind of dried up. Sometimes when there is more to be done, projects, but fewer people some consolidation is in order. Some belt tightening as it were. You know, in Sam Walton's book he tells people how to prosper in regard to his stores. He says to not compete head on because he will bury you. But to sell what he doesn't. Ever ask yourself why when Wal Mart builds a new store all the other big box companies cluster around.  I worked seventeen years at Wal Mart, most as Sporting Goods department manager. I was Academy Sports worst enemy and best salesman at the same time. I could undersell them on our shared inventory and send customers to them for what I didn't carry.. In some ways we, the USGenweb, tends to compete head on with much bigger guns. Maybe we should take something from Sam Walton's book. -- “The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven not man's.”
