For some years Oklahoma would have get-togethers. Logan county genealogical Society used to have a genealogy fair every year. Some of us would pack up our computers and set up a table to do "research" for visitors. One time we gathered at a rural cemetery on Memorial Day, had a picnic and canvassed the cemetery for the county website. Another time we got together in Guthrie, rode the tour trolley and toured the Shrine Temple. Once we gathered in the conference room at a restaurant and just shared a good time. The get-togethers were an out growth of the OKGen mail list. We were a very chatty bunch back in those days. We shared a lot of just living. Most members were CC's but some were, like me then, just friends. Our get-togethers were not limited to just OKGenWeb CC's. I think that the TX get-togethers are why TX CCs are more chatty than the AR CCs. TXGenWeb meetings are also open to other state CCs who live close and would like to attend. I had to promise the AR CCs a long time ago that our list would NOT be chatty. LOL I did try one time to get the AR CCs to meet at the FGS conference in Little Rock and no one was interested. <sigh> I accidentally ran into one of the AR CCs in the ladies' bathroom, but that is the only one I met during the conference. I think our problem is that a lot of the AR CCs are older or don't live in the state. I recently had one who resigned and her "excuse" was that she was 92 years old! Isn't it funny that online we get an idea in our heads of the age of someone or how they look, etc. I hope that as technology gets easier and more advanced, we can someday have an online virtual conference where we can all see each other. The technology is there; it is just that most of the CCs don't have the computers and equipment (video cams, etc.) to do it yet. Wouldn't that be fun??? It is my belief that the more we meet face-to-face, the more we can get rid of the "she/he is evil" mindset. I know that has happened with someone I met in person and I now consider them a friend.
