    2. It seems at least possible that the library and archives may be protected by the state constitution...I wonder if this is the case. http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(w2nrvyqqlelvjeynciwgrx45))/mileg.aspx?page=MCLconstitutionSearch -------------- Original message from betty thomas <[email protected]>: -------------- Some of you may already know that the Gov. of the state of Michigan wants to close the Michigan State Library and Archives {meaning the archives would be sold or thrown away!!] All to make up a budget deficit of several BILLION dollars. Closing the archive will only save 2 or so MILLION in the budget. In the empty building they want to put a kids science center, which will cost MUCH > more than they will save with the closing of the archive. > The closing is now almost a sure thing and if nothing is done, other state governors/legislatures etc. may think this is a good way to cut budgets. 3. I have a suggestion. Why don't the Governor reduce ALL STATE SALARIES by at least 10 per cent and reduce every state office personnel by 5%. Don't close the state archives. Or maybe Michigan should just get another Governor and state officials. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Harold Kilmer, NMGenWeb SC http://www.nmgenweb.us/ ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2009 11:05 AM Subject: Re: [STATE-COORD] Closing of Michigan State Library and Archives > It seems at least possible that the library and archives may be protected > by the state constitution...I wonder if this is the case. > http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(w2nrvyqqlelvjeynciwgrx45))/mileg.aspx?page=MCLconstitutionSearch > -------------- Original message from betty thomas > <[email protected]>: -------------- > > Some of you may already know that the Gov. of the state of Michigan wants > to close the Michigan State Library and Archives {meaning the archives > would be sold or thrown away!!] All to make up a budget deficit of several > BILLION dollars. 3. Just an update folks. It seems HIGenWeb.org is having the same problem as the national pages. I sent Joy an email [as I can't find a password that works, which could be the fault of the hacker or my poor bookkeeping :)] so once I have that I'll just reupload the pages. 3. Another casualty of the budget crunches In Ohio, most libraries are funded by the State Library Fund. Our illustrious Democrat governor tried to cut funding to libraries by nearly 75%, which would have meant the end of many libraries. The final State budget cut library funding by about 30%. As a result, to save money, my local library has cancelled their subscription to Heritage Quest.
