    1. [STATE-COORD] Summary of USGENWEB State Pages
    2. Mike St. Clair/ST
    3. I thought it would be interesting to see where the various state projects have ended up over the past year, so I took a look. Below is a brief summary of what I found. Some of these web hosting providers are massive, while others appear to be very small. In a few cases, a single account seems to be shared between more than one state. In other cases, a state seems to have more than a single account with their web hosting provider, but most appear to be running on a single account. Of course, there are many counties in many states still running on Rootsweb, whether or not the state pages are running there. Any of you that would like more details, just yell. I'd be very interested in hearing from anyone who is pleased or displeased with the experience they have had at their current web hosting provider. Performance is very difficult to evaluate, but I took a quick stab at network performance (that is from my location in central Utah on a Comcast connection to those servers that would allow pings and traceroutes). Pings are often prioritized lower than real work, so on an overloaded server or network they can get erratic, but they are an easy way to do a simple test. The Rootsweb and U of Kansas Servers didn't allow this test as they don't respond to ping. The best network performance came from Dream Host and Rackspace. (in the 60 to low 70 millisecond range for a ping) The majority of the servers responded consistently in the mid 70s through the mid 80s. The worst network performance came from the following web host providers, all of them consistently in the 100+ range. KBANet, Bizland, Access Genealogy, AT&T, USGENNET and Virtacore. USGENNET was unusually erratic today ranging from 62 to 300 plus. Mind you, I have no way of knowing if these network timings are "normal" or if something unusual was happening today. I'm scheming up a way to get a better set of numbers and if I pull that off I will let you all know.
