If you have high speed internet that is always on, you have a static IP - it is the same all of the time. If you have dial-up internet, your IP is different each time you connect. The IP address belongs to your internet service provider, and you share an IP with others on the same ISP. An IP address is not a secret piece of information. I believe that even broadband ISP's usually give you dynamic IP addresses, not static. Here is one explanation of it: http://searchwindevelopment.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid8_gci520967,00.html (it does throw an ad in your face that you have to close). Thanks Dale. This pretty well tells the story and I understand it this way. The IP address for my e-mail is owned by my home server, plateautel. It also tells me why some friends who were also on plateautel had a different phone connation than I had when I was using dial up. Apparently each phone dial up had several IP addresses to handle the connections. Now I have had a wireless connection for the past four years and I just let my server worry about the connection, The wireless is faster than my computer operates. Then my IP address for NMGenWeb.us is owned (and paid for ) by me and it never changes. My concern was that a hacker would have to have the IP number for the web server where the counties are located and should not have anything to do with the e-mail IP address. Is this correct thinking? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Harold Kilmer, NMGenWeb SC http://www.nmgenweb.us/ CC for Curry, De Baca, Guadalupe, Harding, Lea, Lincoln, Quay, and Roosevelt Counties in New Mexico. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dale Grimm" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 29, 2009 3:53 AM Subject: Re: [STATE-COORD] Hacker Attacks > If you have high speed internet that is always on, you have a static IP - > it > is the same all of the time. > > If you have dial-up internet, your IP is different each time you connect. > > The IP address belongs to your internet service provider, and you share an > IP with others on the same ISP. > > An IP address is not a secret piece of information. It's very common with web host providers to have the mail service for a domain on the same server and ip address as the web pages. For example, www.nmgenweb.us, is on IP address 98.130.159.31 at IX Webhosting. If you send or receive mail using nmgenweb.us as part of the email address and through the mail server they provide, it will be that same IP address. Most providers of Internet connections to your home require (or at least try to force) you to use their email server for sending mail. That would be entirely different than the IP and server your web pages are retrieved from. Only a few weird folks like me use their own email server for sending. The IP address for your internet connection belongs to your ISP. There is no separate IP for e-mails. The IP for NMGenWeb.us is owned by IX. You may be leasing it from them, but it is registered to them. If you discontinue your hosting with them or stop paying for it, they can take it back and re-use it. And my DSL connection is faster than I am. Dale > Thanks Dale. This pretty well tells the story and I understand it this > way. > The IP address for my e-mail is owned by my home server, plateautel.
