    3. Harold, A static IP is one that doesn't change as you log on and off from the internet. By far, the vast majority of users will not have a static IP address, they'll have what is referred to as a dynamic IP address. The ISPs have blocks of IP addresses that get shared between users as they log on and off of the internet. The more IP addresses that a ISP has to have to meet their customer requirements, the more it costs them (the ISP). Anyone can request a static IP address from your ISP, but the cost may be higher. I know, for me, a static IP address would have an additional charge of $25.00/month on top of my basic internet access charge. A static IP address is sometimes required by software constraints - I know we've run into the requirement in/on one of the Projects that I work with because we're running a script that renames images and uploads them to a different server. Some web developers and/or projects also require them for various other reasons. For 99.99% of us a static IP address is not required for what we do. This is how some of us learn about a static IP number. How do you get one? What good is it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Harold Kilmer, NMGenWeb SC http://www.nmgenweb.us/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Butler County Coordinator" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 28, 2009 2:06 PM Subject: Re: [STATE-COORD] Hacker Attacks > Sorry I did not notice that my response went to the list until I received > a copy of it, but since few, if any, of us have a static IP address, does > it really matter who sees it?
