I've been hammered this way several times, and for that reason I use EveryDNS (http://www.everydns.net) to do my own DNS rather than leave that to the web host provider. It's priced right - free. And it's got a simple web interface that doesn't required high tech knowledge. It's also hosted in four independent locations (including one in Europe) that ensures quick DNS resolution, whereever your visitor is coming from. It does mean you have to update the IP addresses yourself if your host is ever moved but I'd rather do that than have the provider mess it up about half the time.
