The SC could put up a page on the state web site: "Sorry this web site is temporarily down. Check here for the most recent developments (and link to the usgennet web site). For more information about this county, contact (and put CC's e-mail addy here)" Then link from the state site to this page and comment out the current web site link. All you need to do is add a "!-- " in front of the <a href... in the html code, like this: <!-- a href... and put a " --" at the end of the link's ".../a>", like this: /a --> Once the server is restored, all you do is remove the links to the temp page and delete the added code from the commented out links. [snip] If Rootsweb went down, most of us couldn't declare anything to a wide audience since many of us use Rootsweb for our lists. I do have an "internal" (to my email client) list of my CCs, so I could at least get that far. George p.s. I'll let Derick answer your question to him re NC... however speaking MA and CT I would give it a good while before asking CCs to move. But, eventually if a CC does not have an active site, that CC would need to be replaced.
I would certainly hope that folks would be understanding with a major problem with RootsWeb. I also believe that patience should be observed with this server outage. If any of my counties were down, I would set up the link from the state page to go to a temporary page that explains the problem and inviting them to check back later. I have done that in the past for a different server that was down. Maybe Ed won't mind if I share an example of one of the pages - http://www.rootsweb.com/~arclark/ - that was used several years ago when his server was down.
