    3. That is indeed great news! I've noticed that your society was always among the top leaders on the Society Leaderboard at https://the1940census.com/society/society-dashboard/ - you should definitely be VERY proud of your accomplishments. I love to hear this kind of great, positive news. Kudos to everyone involved! I coordinated an indexing group for the TNGenWeb. We didn't produce as much as yours did, but I was very proud to see our genweb group represent so well. We had about 50 people indexing and did about 350,000 names. I blogged about it at http://tngenweb.org/blog/tngenweb-rocked-1940-census-indexing/. From the great effort that came from that, we also now have a group of volunteers to help with future indexing projects for TNGenWeb - we are working on putting together some options now to try and continue and engage some of those that signed up for the census project. Maybe they will become longer-term genweb volunteers :-) I'm hoping you'll share with us more once you get your webinar subscription up and running - we can never have too many webinars! -- Taneya Y. 3. "Drawn and quartered"? No. You are exactly right about our Project and I totally agree about our jobs as SC and ASC for our States, we are the front line for each of our States and under no circumstances should we be standing back and letting our Projects go down. While I haven't been with the USGenWeb as long as a lot of you, I have always thought that this was the greatest Project of its kind and almost everybody who has done any genealogy research has heard of us. As I have said before, although each of our States may have their own individual problems, I see no indication that it means there is no interest in our Project. Times have changed and new avenues of communications are opening up, but researchers are still interested in going to our websites to get whatever kinds of help we can offer, I see and hear it every single day from them, and researchers truly are grateful for any kind of assistance that points them in the right direction even when we don't have what they are looking for. 3. I have just returned from visiting the Bradford County PA Historical Society.  The comments were positive and shared that it is part of researching a family history.   Very neat by the way.  Bradford Historical Society is housed in the original Towanda jail.  The indexes will tell you that family histories are found in cell 308.  So impressive and they also house a museum.   Towanda is also the home base for the Marcellus Drilling here in Pennsylvania and the town and even the historical society reflects that.       ~ Nancy   PAGenWeb   ·         BucksCountyHistory ·         Bucks GenWeb ·         Northampton GenWeb ·       PAGenWeb ·         Nockamixon >________________________________ >From: Deloris Williams <del_williams@comcast.net> >To: state-coord@rootsweb.com >Sent: Thursday, August 9, 2012 4:04 PM >Subject: Re: [STATE-COORD] State Coordinators > >"Drawn and quartered"?  No. >You are exactly right about our Project and I totally agree about our jobs >as SC and ASC for our States, we are the front line for each of our States >and under no circumstances should we be standing back and letting our >Projects go down.  While I haven't been with the USGenWeb as long as a lot >of you, I have always thought that this was the greatest Project of its kind >and almost everybody who has done any genealogy research has heard of us. 3. I'm probably going to be drawn and quartered and shot at sunrise when I post this, but I'm going to do it anyway. We as State Coordinators should be the cheerleaders for our states. We are the generals leading the battle. We rally the troops, pick up sick and injured helping get them back to their health to take their place again, recruit new people to take the place of those "killed in action," check on them to see if they are getting the job done or need some help, and even firing some who are not getting the job done, etc. If we, as a State Coordinator, reach a point where we are no longer able to cheer FOR the Project, it is time to step aside and let someone else take over who WILL cheer for the Project. I fell in love with the USGenWeb Project way back in 1996 and nothing has made me change that opinion. We are NOT dying. We are living and breathing and helping genealogists every day. That has been my mantra through all the political crap, the negativity, the flames, etc. WE ARE HERE TO HELP GENEALOGISTS WITH THEIR RESEARCH. Push all the other stuff aside and focus on that and we will all get along. By the way, we are already down to 5 counties that are adoptable in Arkansas!! Better grab yours fast before they are gone! 3. My reasoning for posting to this list is that, historically, people have always "Gone to Texas" and some of the USGenWeb members may be interested in "migrating" into the area. <g> We are receiving requests for information on adopting a county from our FB page and our county mail lists so the number of available counties will drop almost as quickly as it rose. Which is a good sign that the USGenWeb is not dying. 1. Re: [STATE-COORD] Texas Counties Available
    2. Shirley Cullum
    3. Betsy's reply is spot on. Early on, Texas volunteers were allowed to take on as many counties as they wanted in order to get the 254 counties online. After 15+ years, ill health is the main reason for CC's retiring and that has resulted in a high orphan county count. And, as Betsy said, volunteers are taking over some counties and new volunteers are joining the project. I agree with Betsy in that the USGenWeb is not dead and will continue to fill a need for researchers. Our volunteers provide person to person contact and go the extra mile to help find information. The other projects just can't hold a candle to the USGenWeb! Shirley On Wed, Aug 8, 2012 at 5:04 PM, Betsy <betsyamills@gmail.com> wrote: > So sorry to hear your state is dead or dying. 3. I'm not sure where you are looking, but on http://www.argenweb.net/arcounty.htm - you will find these counties marked adoptable: Crawford and Desha I just sent the note to the webmaster earlier today who will add these counties as adoptable very shortly: Drew, Lovely, Faulkner, Lafayette, Lawrence, and Izard Oops! Minus Lawrence as it was just adopted! Thanks! Jan, If you maintain communication across the multiple forums now available, good for you! I was just thinking that asking people via the USGW State lists is self limiting. It amounts to asking people who may already be maintaining multiple counties to take on another. If the USGW is to survive, we will always need to find new volunteers -- and that means finding ways to reach out to those people who may have the interest and the skills, but hadn't thought about volunteering for the the USGW as a way to contribute and further their personal interest in genealogy and history.
