I SO agree. Illinois had to move and some of the counties were impossible due to the stupid program they used to set up. The pages look like pictures. Let's stick to HTML. AFAIK the major word processors can output in HTML. There are free text editors that do it. We have a CC who has done his county in textpad for 15 years. It isn't elegant and it isn't the best solution but it is better than that garbage. At 08:14 AM 9/19/2012, Denise Wells wrote: >Also, Pat >Asher stepped up and volunteered to get a couple of the counties redesigned >and updated from a program that most Coordinators do not use for two large >counties, The program Denise mentioned is called TreePad. It is an "information manager" meant for organizing your personal projects, notes and files. It renames your files using 40 character alpha-numerical files names that look like this: 0A8B471BD725046C8A35B81892B1F8DE871270F1.html dumps them all into two folders (documents and images) and creates an index you use to access them. Like all word processor generated web pages, it writes bloated HTML. But the real problem with using TreePad to create a USGenWeb site is that the files can not be identified unless you are using TreePad. If the TreePad generated site is turned over to someone else, they can't edit, move, or rename a file because they have no way of changing the program generated index. All the files have to be identified, renamed, and sorted into appropriate folders before you can even begin a redesign. If any of you have CCs who are using TreePad to create their web site, you can anticipate a real headache when that CC resigns. It is just my personal opinion, but I would not allow the use of TreePad for any USGenWeb site. I know there are people who know a lot about a county but next to nothing about HTML and don't want to learn. Rather than resorting to an automated program that creates a problem, find an assistant CC who can do the HTML. My two cents, Pat Asher
I know I'm a bit late to this conversation; however, I was elected SC in Indiana and took office on August 15. We definitely had some attrition as 3 coordinators left and among the 3 they left 13 counties orphaned. Indiana was in need of a major overhaul and that has been occurring. I posted last week and 3 of those posted counties were adopted. Also, Pat Asher stepped up and volunteered to get a couple of the counties redesigned and updated from a program that most Coordinators do not use for two large counties, Two other Indiana CCs have also stepped up to redesign and ready some counties that had been lingering for quite some time. I pushed for more communication with the County Coordinators and found that several were not even on our mandatory mail list. Several were going to quit because they hadn't liked how things had gone over the past year. I got on the phone with those coordinators and they stayed. Some other coordinators that no one had communicated with to find out what was going on in their lives were contacted by phone. They admitted they needed to resign for one reason or another.... not enough time based on changes in work, family issues and health... Now, the state pages have been redesigned by Jeff Kemp, one of my ASCs, counties are being updated, and great communication is being fostered on our mandatory mail list for coordinators. Coordinators are, for the most part, excited. I am committed to a new Indiana with caring, sharing, communication and harmony. People are invigorated and happy about the communication. However, there are always those few who hate communication, don't want to share and get confronted when requests are made of them. Those folks have either chosen to communicate or leave. So we are indeed going through a transition period that is causing Indiana to grow and get things back on track. My 2nd ASC has rounded up a group of our CCs who are well-versed in either web design or design issues and created our newest committee - Tech Help Pages. It provides lots of information and links to helpful items, plus there are CCs who are on call to help other CCs with issues with their pages. It's starting to work well also. So, Indiana is far from failing. It's being rejuvenated. Sometimes it takes a bit of effort, but I find it well worth causing something bigger and better. And it's working. Also, for New Jersey, I am engaging with two other potential coordinators for 2 of the 3 counties that are available for adoption. On another good note, I've just received permission to retain a Rootsweb site for a county where one of our CCs passed away unexpectedly. I requested the County from Rootsweb and we began engaging in discussions with the family, and yesterday I received permission for NJ to retain the work that he did, with credit being attributed to him. The site will soon carry a dedication to him. So, things are good! We now have a new design for our state pages for INGenWeb. www.INGenWeb.org We are also preparing several counties for adoption. If you or someone you know, has a connection to one of these counties and is interested in adopting one, have them contact me. We are currently rebuilding some of these counties and they are not yet ready, but we would love to know if anyone is interested in them. Unfortunately, Indiana was in need of a major overhaul and we are working diligently to get the entire state updated, upgraded and we are very excited to bring in new coordinators to the state. I have built a great team and we are very committed to having Indiana be a huge impact on the research of our visitors. My ASCs are Lena Harper and Jeff Kemp. If you are interested, please be in touch with me. Friend" <blindgenealogist@gmail.com> Hi Matthew D., I was opening USGENWEB home page. However, I could then open all states except for ILGENWEB. From another source I found they are moving to a new server. They gave me a Web address that works.\ Thanks for reply, but now problem is solved. I'm with Joy in Birmingham so we're doing great. On Aug 31, 2012 6:46 AM, "Joy Fisher" <sdgenweb@yahoo.com> wrote: > I was in Central FL when Isaac brushed by the FL Keys. I was in Central FL when Isaac brushed by the FL Keys. We had gloomy, rainy days with some wind from some of the outer bands, but nothing traumatic. Then when we left FL for Birmingham, Those outer bands followed us and we had a gloomy, rainy day yesterday here. Hoping Isaac is finally through following us when we leave for California on Sunday. ________________________________ From: Sherri Bradley <kyvitals@windstream.net> To: state-coord@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2012 8:22 PM Subject: [STATE-COORD] Check In With Isaac's wrath being released on the gulf coast, we're thinking of all of you in the "line of fire". We had lots of rain down here in SE Florida, but we are fine. Also had lots of wind and they shut down all the public transportation at noon the other day, but we are doing well. We were very lucky.
