    1. [STATE-COORD] Milestone Reached
    2. Karen De Groote via
    3. I wanted to let everyone know that the Iowa Gravestone Project, the brainchild of IAGenWeb CC Rich Lowe and his son Jeff, just hit 1,000,000th gravestone record at around 4:00 pm CST today. Iowa has a current population of about 3 million people and it is rather sparsely populated in the rural areas so the number is most significant. The IAGenWeb project has been a huge supporter of the "GPP" from it's infancy and it is in fact listed as one of our special projects. Jeff Lowe made the program open-access almost from the beginning and 30 states now use the software. With the purchase of Find A Grave by Ancestry, I am not personally sure if that will be freely available in the long term and states that do not utilize the GPP program might want to check in to the possibility of also working with it at some point, to preserve the gravestones of our ancestors. Here is a link that lists the states that use the GPP and how you can find out more about the program. http://iowagravestones.org/gpp-info.php In Iowa, we have seen the value of preserving headstones with the vandalism that seems to be ever increasing. It is amazing what damage can occur naturally in a 10 year time period as well, on these older stones. I am sure I am preaching to the choir in this regard but I wanted to point out an option for like minded XXGenWebs if they would like set up their own Gravestone Photo Project. Thanks for listening to a little happy news and have a great night! Karen De Groote Assistant State Coordinator IAGenWeb
