    3. Hi folks, Guess that I don't understand the problem. If I want to send a comment to the SC or ASC of Mississippi, for example, I expect to go to the USGenWeb main page or to the MSGenWeb main page to find their addresses. My problems with spam is not related to any of the nine USGenWeb pages, the three "volunteer" pages, or my "commercial" page that I host. It is with the pages that I visit, the three major political parties, my banks, my broker, and the companies from whom I purchase products "online, etc. ...all selling their lists (with full disclosure for what that is worth). And my military service back in the early sixties was as a cryptographer, constantly trying to break the enemies code and I can assure you that the modern day hackers and harvesters are constantly breaking any coded data on the internet just as we did and with the same mathematical techniques. So again, it seems to me that if we want to hold ourselves out to the public as genealogical service providers, we have to take our chances and individually protect ourselves. Should Pam be our cryptographer? My opinion is no. 3. The program they talk about on that page is probably the same thing I used for The Registry. If anyone wants to encrypt on their site without going thru The Registry I'll be glad to share the script but it would really be better if you just registered yourself then sent your registry # to Pam... and she'll never have to change it again unless the SC changes. Register your visitors too and they'll only have 1 place to make a change too... less work for everyone except The Registry. ;-) nt -----Original Message----- From: Carol [mailto:wygenweb@ipa.net] Sent: Tuesday, October 15, 2002 10:11 PM To: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [STATE-COORD-L] Who's Who - SC page Most anti-spam literature recommends hiding email addresses on websites. For those of you that are as tired of the robot harvestors and spam as I am, you might want to register your addy too. All addy's are encrypted on that site. Besides helping with the spam it also makes only 1 place for folks to have to update their addy's when they change it. Between The Registry and using MailWasher I'm down to less than 20 spams a day on a busy day and no more than 4 or 5 some days. http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/ http://www.mailwasher.net - free and works great!!!! 3. How will a click graphic solve the problem. This is probably a dumb question, but the email address would still be in the coding. I have coded my email address on the pages it appears on (too late since I am still being attacked by those "sex goddess messages" and would be glad to do that for anyone who is willing to take the time to go to the site that will code the email address and send it to me. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cyrs/CharacterTest.htm Pam -----Original Message----- From: Carol [mailto:wygenweb@ipa.net] Sent: Tuesday, October 15, 2002 6:43 PM To: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [STATE-COORD-L] Who's Who - SC page Just a suggestion, Pam. Could you please put a click graphic for each email address? That will prevent the spam robots from harvesting the emails from that page. They don't recognize email addresses within the <img coding. I really am getting tired of spam about Asian sex goddesses. 3. Most anti-spam literature recommends hiding email addresses on websites. It should be common practice for the USGenWEb websites since we are so often, so completely, and aggressively targeted for harvesting. Here's a webpage that gives some other suggestions. http://www.robelle.com/tips/email-cloak.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Reid" <pamreid@comcast.net> To: <STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 15, 2002 10:06 PM Subject: RE: [STATE-COORD-L] Who's Who - SC page > I think this is very appropriate discussion for the list.
