    3. The Election Committee is still waiting for the results. Larry apparently found himself tied up in a business conference yesterday, and was unable to process the numbers. The EC is assuming we'll get them Monday morning. 1. [STATE-COORD] OK Voting is over. Can we get back to the real problem?
    2. ~Richard...~
    3. This had nothing to do with "campaigning". Any one thinking it did was admitting that it was wrong and they were in breach of the USGenWeb bylaws. Other wise they would have happily have said "look what a great thing we have done. Look what great leaders we are." But no instead they claim that people can not read. You spin word to mean things never intended. USGenWeb has a very real history. That history is no begging for money for themselves. It is not what USGenWeb is about. If there is other XXGenWeb projects in breach then they need to change also. But this discussion is about three AB members that have taken it upon themselves to try to circumnavigate the bylaws. It is not about whether or not "XXXXX County Historical and Genealogical Society" can soliciting funds. Sure they can. More power to them. I give to them and pay my dues every year. This is about calling yourself a part USGenWeb, or XXGenWeb project and soliciting funds from USGenWeb and XXGenWeb pages. It is about how you can use USGenWeb to create your own personal empire. Rootsweb is great example. Most all of us gave to it. We thought it was going to be utopia. Something happened and it was sold to the money side of genealogy. The real question is, we came up with a real good idea. Are we now ready to sell that idea to the money side of genealogy? Do we really need to sell our principles? Are we going to finally let the naysayer win? How many time do we have to be told, you just can't do genealogy for nothing. The USGenWeb Project consists of a group of volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States. The Project is non-commercial and fully committed to free access for everyone. DON'T FORGET TO SEND MONEY TO KEEP IT THAT WAY TO OUR PAY PAL ACCOUNT!!! Richard... Richard M. 3. Ellen....had you read Mr. Petty's ENTIRE post instead of looking for something to make a cutting comment about, you would have seen that his point was that some people in this Project term "offensive" anything that disagrees with their opinion. Vicki, by stating that the discussion in regard to someone making money off of the Project was "campaigning" was attempting to turn the point away from the fact that some are making, or planning to make, money off of the Project. And, was hoping to turn some "off" because it was pure politics. If you don't like the word "money", let's term it "something of value". For surely, if there isn't any actual cash accrued over and above expenses, then there is the feeding of dreams of creating a little empirical corporation that asks for contributions in order to supply the "free" information....including purchasing a server and hitting on foundations for funding. Once again, IF it is okay to organize a group like Friends of IAGenWeb to solicit funds to maintain/allow the posting of "free access" genealogical information, then there is nothing wrong with Wright County Historical and Genealogical Society soliciting funds to maintain/allow the posting of "free access" information to the Wright County site. And, that it also opens the door for ALL XXGenWeb Projects to do the same.......and filters down to the local coordinators. A FREE-FOR-ALL, do whatever you wish.....as long as you don't actually charge for the information itself, or have the USGenWeb Project logo on the "begging pages." 3. Vicki, since the end of July, there has been *no campaigning*. The only races left up in the air are runoffs. And I believe that voting on them ended this week. I know what it is. Those of us who disagree with the NC and raise issues are running a smear campaign against him and that was what you meant by campaigning, right? I now understand. I forgot my place. How dare I have feelings on an issue that are not the same as the NC's and yours! Remember this if you remember nothing else I ever say: the only speech that is legally protected is the speech with which you disagree and do not want to hear. That's right. Offensive speech is protected. There is no need to protect speech that you agree with, enjoy or like. 3. My read is that Isaiah is in a run-off election with Tim and that raising the soliciting issue might hurt Isaiah's campaign. I believe we have all managed to discuss the soliciting issue without turning it into a campaign issue. Good for us! And... a sign that we are not into petty bickering. 3. >I think we flip-flop back and forth between "leave volunteers alone and be grateful for whatever they do" and an unrealistic level of bureaucracy. There must be a happy medium. I'm strongly in favor of leaving the CCs alone to work without interference, but I don't think setting up a list of basics which could reasonably be expected by visiting researchers would be taken badly. A list of basic directional answers on the state site also seems like a good idea. One more thing for my to do list... > I really wonder how many of our CCs agree with this? I'm in 9 states and whenever I went to a new state, I "looked around" before offering to adopt. I find FAR more sites that don't focus on being such a gateway--but rather focus on transcriptions and volunteer networks. I OFTEN find that we duplicate efforts that exist free-of-charge elsewhere. > I think some of our CCs feel they are personally responsible for providing information instead of FACILITATING finding of information. I don't think we give good direction to them, nor do I think many of them agree with or understand what we're saying here. I say this based on feedback of my own sites--which are generally 90% information on finding sources and 10% transcription (and that's if I'm lucky; but in some counties there are TONS of transcriptions available). On the other hand, I would also say that a significant portion of the general public thinks "it's all on the Internet" and that having all your census transcripts and cemetery listings etc. available for instant searching *is* a reasonable expectation, so the CCs who provide content-heavy sites are giving their visitors exactly what they want. If they're not able to, that's OK, but I don't think doing it is straying from their mission. Bob Sullivan NYGenWeb SC
