Not sure I can make it to St. Louis, but I would be happy to provide copies of handouts used in May. 3. I just got the below email from a gentleman introducing his new site - it is absolutely wonderful - so you all might want to check it out - since it is new, it might not help you so much now, currently lists: Denver, Colorado 1892 Stamford, Connecticut 1907 Chicago, Illinois 1844 Monson, Massachusetts 1897 New York City, New York 1786 Cleveland, Ohio 1837 Ohio City, Ohio 1837 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1890 Monroe, Wisconsin 1891 Perhaps in the future, more directories will be added. I suggest that the SCs consider linking it to their state sites. The main pages are at: http://olddirectorysearch.com/ I will say that it has a lot of advertizing on it for Ancestory - but for now, it appears to be free. I tried it out and got right in.... 2. I've said more than once "I MISS BETSY!!" However, I have gotten responses, just finding it difficult. As Vicki said, the accounts belong to the individual, so without the individual available to say "I don't want it anymore" it is very difficult to get the current account reassigned. And I understand their point. No one wants to take a website away from anyone. At best, several months down the road you might get them to assign that URL to you. It is worth mentioning now so that you'll have the history of your request documented. However, unless you can somehow get the former CC to relinguish the website or send an email saying they want it passed on, it is very difficult to get the reassignment. I do have two sites where I do have someone whose computer crashed and they need to give up the counties. An email from her was sent to rootsweb with no response yet. But it hasn't been quite a week yet. Even in the case of a mailing list that was abandoned, I had trouble getting that because the admin's email address wasn't bouncing. It will be tough. BTW - Generally what is done is a second rootsweb URL can be requested for the same county, ie ~caorang2 to "replace" caorange - and then you can link to that site. You can request the new site from rootsweb - and maybe some day you can regain the hold. -----Original Message----- From: Gene Andert <gandert@mac.com> Sent: Sep 16, 2003 3:57 PM To: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [STATE-COORD] RootsWeb Question For USGenWeb web sites that are clearly abandoned (many months/year+ with no update and inability to contact county coordinator electronically or via snail mail) the Indiana USGenWeb Project seeks to have these sites adopted by responsible, qualified individuals who will maintain them as new County Coordinators. 3. I had a similar problem this last month. I e-mailed accounts@Rootsweb.com and waited a couple of weeks with no reply. I then sent an e-mail to Webmaster@Rootsweb.com and received a response within a day or two. I was originally told that I could not use the prior abandoned URL, however, a week later when I received my account and password information it was for the old account. There's definitely more lag time that I would expect from the accounts department. I guess the moral of the story is to e-mail the Webmaster! Worked for me. 3. Yes. It has taken a while since the new person is learning, but you will hear from them. Send another message to remind them you are waiting. grin Pat -------Original Message------- From: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, September 16, 2003 13:01:49 To: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [STATE-COORD] RootsWeb Question For USGenWeb web sites that are clearly abandoned (many months/year+ with no update and inability to contact county coordinator electronically or via snail mail) the Indiana USGenWeb Project seeks to have these sites adopted by responsible, qualified individuals who will maintain them as new County Coordinators. Instead of getting a new password for a county that has not been updated for a year, now I get new web space, which I didn't really need. There is web space for San Jacinto Co. TX floating out there in Rootsweb land that has not been updated since 1997. It has the USGenweb logo on it, and the old TXGenWeb logo on it. It was abandoned long ago, but it is still there.
