Hi everyone, Just a little over two months from the GenTech conference, and, while we've got a pretty good start, there are a number of fairly urgent needs to make our presence at the conference fruitful for USGenWeb. We've raised just enough money to pay for the booth and a small part of the other expenses. In other words, we'll BE there at GenTech. The question now becomes, "Will we have a nice display?" As it stands right now, it won't be a whole lot to write home about <g>. We can do better. So I'm writing this note in hopes that we as a Project will pitch in with the same "Can Do" attitude that has made us the best all-volunteer genealogy project on the Internet. Here's what I need to make our GenTech display a winner: 1. People. If you're planning on attending GenTech, please let me know. I'd like to have some assistance setting up and manning the booth, and it would be lots of fun to spend some time with other USGenWeb folks. :) 2. Equipment. We need a couple of laptops at a bare minimum. It would be cool to have a projector and screen for a very visible PowerPoint presentation. If no more money is raised, we for sure won't be able to pay for internet connectivity, and so this would be a decent alternative. So, if you are going to GenTech and I can count on you to bring some of this kind of equipment with you, please let me know! 3. Brochures. Even if you *aren't* going to GenTech, here's an area where you can help out! I'm looking for finished product, here . . . flyers, trifold, half-fold, whatever, but already printed out and ready to hand out. I'd love to see a brochure for each state and special project - Here's your chance to shine! Counties and towns can make their own brochures, too. If you'd like to send me (however many) brochures, I will get them to GenTech and make sure they're available to attendees. They can be mailed to my home . . . I'll give the addy to any who are interested. 4. Monetary Donations. As I wrote earlier, we've raised enough money to cover the charge for the booth and a little extra (and *many thank* to those who have donated!). As of this writing, we've got a grand total of $222.99. After paying for the booth ($150), that leaves $72.99 for everything else. We'd like to have a number of topic-specific flyers printed up to pass out (such as "What is a CC", "How Can I Help?", "Getting the Most From USGenWeb Sites", and others - we're looking for more ideas!). I'd like these to be a little higher quality than plain-paper copies if we have the budget for it. Perhaps a light card stock? Color? Also, if the budget will allow, it would be nice to decorate the booth instead of just leaving it as-is. We need to know soon just *what* the budget will be! If you read this far, thanks! So - if you are able to help out in any of these ways, please contact me. You can also visit the USGenWeb GenTech Donation page at http://www.usgenweb.org/GenTech/ . I'd like to say thanks once again to the Utah Genealogical Society for their donation of a sign/banner for our booth, and to D. Joshua Taylor (who will also be teaching at the conference) for all of his help and for donating an ad in the conference program for USGenWeb. I'm looking forward to spreading the word about USGenWeb at the GenTech Conference! With your help, we can have a professional-looking, interesting, helpful display that we can be proud of. Shari Handley shari@tyaskin.com This message may be forwarded to other internal USGenWeb mailing lists (such as state lists). Thanks!

For those of you who have been notified that individuals are having problems accessing the FTP records filed on rootsweb in the USGenWeb Archives, here is something to note. Please feel free to pass it on to your Mailing Lists. R/S MAK --- James wrote: Marcia, I just figured out my problem downloading the FTP cemetery pages on the Monroe Co. site! Here is one to keep for future reference! I connect to the internet using a DSL Cable modem high speed connection, my operating system on my computer is Microsoft Windows XP, and my web browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. My problem was that I couldn't access FTP sites and make downloads. Answer- In the "Internet Options" folder of Internet Explorer there is an "Advanced" tab. There are many options that can be checked on or off on the advanced page. Under the "Browsing" heading of that section is a box that must be checked on if using a firewall or DSL connection. It reads, "Use passive FTP(for firewall and DSL modem compatability)." I have had no problems since turning on this feature, maybe this will help someone else who is ripping out their hair! Thanks again, James ===== MAKTranscriber - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwood http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiportag http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimonroe __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? To all Project members: Please forward this note to all USGenWeb Members and lists. The USGenWeb Election Committee is looking for three volunteers who would like to serve on the Election Committee. The "job" includes developing a working relationship with Project members, SCs, and/or Archives personnel to maintain current Project Membership and Registration Lists, and to assist in all polls and elections, especially during the months of June and July when the EC hosts the USGenWeb Project's Annual Election. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of joining an excellent team to handle a difficult and important responsibility. The following one year replacement regional seats are currently open: NOTE: You do *not* have to be a member in either of these regions to be eligible to serve in these regions. Northeast North Central Region Term: Jan 1, 2004 - Dec 31, 2004 SouthWest/South Central Region Term: Jan 1, 2004 - Dec 31, 2004 The following two-year Archives seat is currently available: NOTE: You must be a member of one of the Archives Projects, but not necessarily the projects listed below. State Archives: Northwest Plains & North East North Central Regions; Plus OK, KS, & TX; Tombstone Project. Term: Jan 1, 2004 - 31 December 2005 Any member of the USGW Project who is eligible to vote is eligible for membership in the EC, the exception being that no Advisory Board member may serve as a working member of the EC. An EC member who is elected to national office may continue to serve on the EC until seated on the AB. EC Members are asked to check mail daily, and must be responsive to Email. If you are interested in volunteering, please send a note to: <e.j.pack@natchezbelle.org> with the subject line, "Volunteer EC". Please include a brief description of your current USGW participation, including URLs of any sites you maintain. Selected volunteers will be included on a slate that is presented to the Advisory Board for confirmation. More information about the EC is available at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwelections/ Thank you for your time, and please consider volunteering! Ellen Pack Chair, USGenWeb Elections Committee
