I don't know if I am having the same problem as the rest of you. I have 2 counties on "theusgenweb.org" domain. As of Aug 4 I have been unable to access the files for either county. I have received no information from anyone. Emails to [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) have not been answered. The error message I am getting is: User name and password are incorrect Any suggestions? Susan Nahas SC RIGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/
Susan, I will look into the issue and contact you privately with the solution. Our host recently moved our pages and all of the ftp accounts have had to be deleted and recreated. I suspect that is what affecting your accounts. If others are having the same issue please contact me privately, and I will assist in getting this task done. Thanks! I have CC's in CO that are having the same problems. They can't get to their counties. I CC a county next to South Dakota and updating it. I needed a boarding SD county. So I went here. _http://www.usgenweb.org/_ (http://www.usgenweb.org/) Which gives this for South Dakota. _http://sdgenweb.com/_ (http://sdgenweb.com/) which goes here _http://usgenweb.org/_ (http://usgenweb.org/) So SD is down until a new host is found? I've been hammered this way several times, and for that reason I use EveryDNS (http://www.everydns.net) to do my own DNS rather than leave that to the web host provider. It's priced right - free. And it's got a simple web interface that doesn't required high tech knowledge. It's also hosted in four independent locations (including one in Europe) that ensures quick DNS resolution, whereever your visitor is coming from. It does mean you have to update the IP addresses yourself if your host is ever moved but I'd rather do that than have the provider mess it up about half the time. Like any business, they did the number crunching. They looked at what clients are costing them money. I bet they hope to lose those clients to competitors. Those hosting companies claiming unlimited are just using it to get clients in their door. I bet the same will happen with another host. Time will tell. Another article on Bluehost.com _http://www.tuaw.com/2009/07/20/stars-in-your-pocket-for-free/_ (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/07/20/stars-in-your-pocket-for-free/) Michael Andrews ASC Minnesota I too share your disappointment and have warned Larry Flesher that we may hit the same problem in MOGENWEB. I've also attempted to let the Bluehost president know of the problem and impact of this new unadvertised policy. Time will only tell if I really got through. If the policy remains the same, it's going to cost them literally hundreds of accounts in the world of genealogy. I suspect a similar impact will occur in other areas. And if they don't get that limit posted for new users, I will feel impelled to stop recommending them. I am looking at other hosting options in preparation for a potential move of MOGENWEB. IDGENWEB appears to currently be well within the limit. I'd greatly appreciate hearing from other states about their experience with other hosts. And by the way, this does break my heart because I've been a long time Bluehost user and have a good number of accounts. The performance, features and service have been great. I can't say the same about half a dozen other vendors I used before. It's been somewhat like rolling the dice before I came to Bluehost. There were massive downsides on every vendor I had used. The web hosting service has screwed something up when they migrated my account to a new server. They are working on the problem. It's not the dozen or few dozen state GENWEBs that will hurt them if lost. It's all the personal accounts of genealogists who are coordinators or visitors of USGENWEB. For example, I have four Bluehost sites, only one of which exceeds the file count limit. I also know of at least a dozen folks who have gotten accounts there because of my good experience. If MOGENWEB moves because of this issue I'll likely move my other accounts as well to allow me some consistency in my administration. So it's a leveraged thing. Multiply the genwebs that move by some number of CCs and genealogy users by some number of accounts and I think it's a bad thing for Bluehost. I believe the law of averages does indeed give them a reasonable account target size within a general demographic (like genealogy) even though there are a few that are outsized. They absolutely have the right, but they didn't implement this in the manner that I see them make most changes - that is, with reasonable notice and usually grandfathering existing users. They still have not, at this point, documented that restriction anywhere online that prospective account holders will know about it before they exceed the limit and are abruptly given two weeks to comply. That's not typically of the way they have handled changes in the past and that's one reason for their tremendous growth. They have always taken care of their customers, and that makes their reputation grow. This has not been the norm for Bluehost. Market analysis can't assume every individual account is totally independent. And you have to treat your customers right or the word gets out. Pretty much all of the big hosting suppliers now provide "unlimited" disk space, which has become very cheap to supply, but those who have limits on the number of files (a good many) provide that number to prospective clients. Web servers have limited capacity. Any host who says that they can give you "unlimited web space" is intentionally misleading you. And somewhere in their terms of service they will specify limits on the amount of space you can use on their servers. The average website is well under 100mb in size. The "unlimited space" hosts bank on these sites charging them more than they need to pay for their small usage. When someone like USGenWeb comes along with needs of gigabytes of space, it throws their entire business plan into chaos. And if you leave and go elsewhere, they are pleased. They will continue hosting the small sites, charging them more than they need to pay. Losing genealogy sites would not upset an "unlimited space" host because it costs them substantially more to provide the hosting services than they would be receiving from the customer. Yes, we had the same thing happen to us in NCGenWeb. They told us we were over the limit as well (File Count: 235189) so we ended up buying 2 other accounts and moved the cemeteries, census records, deeds, etc over to the new accounts. It was a huge pain since we have transcribed complete deed books and census records for quite a few counties online along with 100's of cemeteries on a number of sites. We are very disappointed in them over this as well. I couldn't find anything in their policies that states they have a file limit when we first started using their services. If we had known we would have gone elsewhere. Debbie, I got my first notice about 3 months ago for one account that I have there. It had over 308,000 files on it. I got the notice for the second account about a month ago - we had about 248,000 files on that account. We deleted hundreds of thousands of files from the first account and still have it there (but I'm not happy with it), and the second account I moved to ixwebhosting.com about 3 weeks ago. The first account is a KY Special Project site (KY Vital Records Project at http://kyvitals.com/. The second account started out as a personal account, but it houses about 1/2 of the KYGenWeb County sites and also will soon once again house the http://kygenweb.net domain (KYGenWeb Project). So far, no problems with ixwebhosting. I was thoroughly disappointed in BlueHost.com's change in policy and the fact that this little 'hiccup'suddenly appeared and no one knew about it - and it's not written ANYWHERE for an account holder to be aware of.
