Find A Grave has become aggressive lately, at least in my area. In a couple cases [different counties], having discovered someone walking and photographing a cemetery, a regular contributor demanded that the pictures be given to Find A Grave INSTEAD of ILGenWeb. A G&H got chewed out for giving things to me. Three different people doesn't seem like a coincidence. I am not happy. And they probably would have shared the pictures IF they hadn't wanted the pictures INSTEAD of us.
Thanks Dale. This pretty well tells the story and I understand it this way. The IP address for my e-mail is owned by my home server, plateautel. It also tells me why some friends who were also on plateautel had a different phone connation than I had when I was using dial up. Apparently each phone dial up had several IP addresses to handle the connections. Now I have had a wireless connection for the past four years and I just let my server worry about the connection, The wireless is faster than my computer operates. Then my IP address for NMGenWeb.us is owned (and paid for ) by me and it never changes. My concern was that a hacker would have to have the IP number for the web server where the counties are located and should not have anything to do with the e-mail IP address. Is this correct thinking? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Harold Kilmer, NMGenWeb SC http://www.nmgenweb.us/ CC for Curry, De Baca, Guadalupe, Harding, Lea, Lincoln, Quay, and Roosevelt Counties in New Mexico. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dale Grimm" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 29, 2009 3:53 AM Subject: Re: [STATE-COORD] Hacker Attacks > If you have high speed internet that is always on, you have a static IP - > it > is the same all of the time. > > If you have dial-up internet, your IP is different each time you connect. > > The IP address belongs to your internet service provider, and you share an > IP with others on the same ISP. > > An IP address is not a secret piece of information. I feel the same way as Harold. I tell my contributors that the copyright is still theirs and even state so on my websites. Several of the counties in Idaho have gravestone photos that were contributed long before I became SC or the current coordinator became CC and there is nothing to identify who the photographer or the contributor was. All we know is that the coordinator at the time the photos were posted (we don't even know who that CC was) said they had permission to post the photo. One of our coordinators has been asked for permission to upload the photos to Find A Grave. Have any of you faced this situation? If so, how did you handle it? If not, how would you handle it? Send Sherri your most recent IP address and she can establish a range that is allowed. You can check to see what it is by going here: http://whatismyipaddress.com/ And please do send it to her privately. You may find that if you are using a large ISP, that IP may change to a number outside the set range and you will find yourself locked out again. If so, you will have to send her your current IP address again and she will add another range for you. We are doing that in AR and it is working okay - it is a bit of a pain, but it is worth it to keep out the hackers. I believe that even broadband ISP's usually give you dynamic IP addresses, not static. Here is one explanation of it: http://searchwindevelopment.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid8_gci520967,00.html (it does throw an ad in your face that you have to close). Harold, A static IP is one that doesn't change as you log on and off from the internet. By far, the vast majority of users will not have a static IP address, they'll have what is referred to as a dynamic IP address. The ISPs have blocks of IP addresses that get shared between users as they log on and off of the internet. The more IP addresses that a ISP has to have to meet their customer requirements, the more it costs them (the ISP). Anyone can request a static IP address from your ISP, but the cost may be higher. I know, for me, a static IP address would have an additional charge of $25.00/month on top of my basic internet access charge. A static IP address is sometimes required by software constraints - I know we've run into the requirement in/on one of the Projects that I work with because we're running a script that renames images and uploads them to a different server. Some web developers and/or projects also require them for various other reasons. For 99.99% of us a static IP address is not required for what we do. The bottom line of what they did was to go in and overwrite the index pages that belonged to the USGenWeb sites with a generic page that indicated that the sites were never set up. For the most part, only the index pages of the sites were involved. The immediate action that I took was to disable all ftp access yesterday (that's how the hackers got in to make their changes) until we could get a hold on things. All sites have been cleaned and the original index pages uploaded from backup copies. Passwords once again will be changed for all accounts. In order to receive the new passwords to the accounts, the CCs/SCs need to do a complete virus scan and malware scan of their computers. We'll need an email documenting that this has been done. In addition, everyone will need to send me their IP address (please send to [email protected]). To find the IP address, go to http://whatismyip.com. The page will open up and the IP address will be shown in large numbers at the top of the page. If you know whether you have a static IP address, please also include that info. (For those not familiar with this, a static IP address is one that never changes, even when you turn off your computer and restart it. Should you discover any continuing (or other) problems with any involved sites, please be sure to report them. For the record, the discussion of the purpose of the CC Guidelines Committee has been opened on ABCHAT at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/USGENWEB-ALL/2009-12/126154613 7. The AB is going to be defining the expectations that we have for the final product that they come up with so they can begin their work after the first of the year.
