    3. Hi all! In the book, "Cherokee Roots, Volume 1" on page 9 it states the following: "Records of how many people, and when, moved west are limited. It is know for a fact, that as early as the 1790's some Cherokee moved into southeastern Missouri. It is probable that there were already Cherokee settled in the Missouri area. Due to earthquakes and flooding in Missouri, around 1812, most of the Cherokee moved into northwestern Arkansas." It seems to me that with the family of Adam and Hannah being in the southwestern corner of Missouri in the early 1800's that this may apply to them. The Cherokee lands in Oklahoma were in the northeastern corner and along the eastern border of that state. Sometimes the Starrs and others seemed to cross over into northwestern Arkansas to escape harm. Lynette, you mentioned that the family had gone to Oklahoma to sign the roll when the murder of someone was blamed on them and they fled the area as instructed by their father for safety. Do you know what roll that was? "Cherokee Roots, Volume 2" says, "The Old Settler Roll of 1851 was a listing of Cherokee still living in 1851 who were already residing in Oklahoma when the main body of the Cherokee arrived in the winter of 1839--as a result of the Treaty of New Echota (1835). Approximately one third of the Cherokee people at that time were Old Settlers and two thirds were new arrivals." My guess was that this is the roll your source mentioned, but it seems that some of John's and Andrew's children were born in Missouri up until 1857 or so. By 1859 they were in Texas. The next roll was in 1852, The Drennen Roll. This was the census of the new arrivals of 1839. This was the New Echota Treaty group--"Trail of Tears" we all have heard about. The Dawes Roll continued for a long time. It began in 1898 and went until 1914. It was too late to be the one we're looking for. All the others were either too early or too late. Does anyone know the answer to this? Crystal
