Murial, This is an interesting possibility. I guess I have been pounded over the head with the Robert Stanton theory all my life that I didn't recognize two of the names I had been searching for when I read your first post. The circa 1835 date that I gave as Thomas' birth date is just a guess. With him not showing up on any census lists I had to go by the fact that he was probably about 20-22 when My ggrandfather was born. Would have been about the right age to enter the service too, but then men were serving into their 40's as needed so 1835 was not set in stone. 1829 could be correct and since I can't connect him to any of the other Stanton families around that area, it is very possible that he was a first generation immigrant. My grandmother, his granddaughter, always thought the family was English but then she always tried to make herself seem better than she was, no offense grams. I can't see any Irish features in our family and I have pictures of Thomas' son Owen both as a young man and older in life. But also the Stantons in Ireland could have been Scotch which many theories surmise. I am in the process of trying to find out why he was listed as a Vermont volunteer. It could be his wife was from Ohio and they might have moved there just before the war or maybe because he enlisted, she went to live with her parents. I don't know her maiden name or I could probably figure that one out. The first census I find Owen in is the 1870 census. Maybe if someone has the 1850 or 1860 Vermont census (did they have an 1860 census?) they could see if they show up there or in New York. I will have to search for some kind of census listing for Ontario and check that out also. Thanks again for the clues. Some one just gave me some clues as to where he might have gone after the war, but this is the first I have seen anyone that might be his parents and siblings. Stay in touch. this could get interesting.
