I was talking to my wife's uncle Harry Stanton about some of the ancestors before it is too late. (He is 96 and they have taken away his driver's license so he just bought himself an electric cart). He said he remembers his grandfather, James Alva Stanton (born 1822 in Crown Point, NY) very well. Harry was a teen ager when his grandfather died and lived just down the road. He says that he always went to grandpa's at the first of the month because grandpa got his Civil War Pension at that time and always treated he and his sisters to sweets or something. Anyway, he says that his grandpa told him that grandpa's father was Elisha Stanton and that grandpa's mother was Jerusha. Uncle Harry says that these people were already dead when he was born. He said that grandpa told him that grandpa's grandfather was James Stanton for whom he was named and that his grandmother was named Hannah. Harry says these people were already dead when he was born. In William Stanton's book, he says that he could not prove whether James A. Stanton of Iowa was descended from Thomas Stanton or not. I have been trying to prove this. Does anyone know if there any records showing the marriage of James Stanton of Stonington, CT and Hannah Alexander. They were purportedly married in Groton, CT but when I wrote to Groton town clerk, I was told no records existed at their office but that all their old records had been transferred to the State Library. The State Library denies this. How about service by James Stanton in the Revolutionary War, maybe from New York state? Can anyone help? Henry Hoover dynasty@cwnet.com
