    3. I noticed you had Vermont Stantons. I am in need of a some help in that respect. Most people who know me know I have been searching for Thomas N. Stanton for a long time, some 70 years if you count the time I and my Great Uncle have searched. I just got back a request for his military records from the National Archives. The only thing they had on Thomas was that he was in the 4th vermont Volunteers, Company D and was transferred into the Navy but never shipped. This is contrary to what I know, in as much as I have written documentation by his own hand that he was Master at Arms on the Ironclad "The Benton", Admiral Porters flagship in the Mississippi Squadron. Somebody has their wires crossed but I thought I would take a shot and see if anyone has a Thomas N. Stanton in their Vermont Stanton lines. He and his wife Elizabeth were living in Newark, OH prior to the war and that is where his son Owen lived. Many Ohioans served in other states militia for one reason or another and the inverse was also true. If he was from Vermont there might have been a reason for him to go back and join up. There is no record of a Thomas N. Stanton in the 4th Volunteers, Company D. and the National Archives has no other listing for a Thomas N. Stanton. He did not die in the war but since his wife died either before or shortly after he left and his son was in the care of another family, he left to seek his fortune and we don't know what became of him. The only other pieces of information I have is that his mother's name might be Isabella and he was born around 1835 and was in a raiding party from "The Benton" near Vicksburg in May of 1862. I have the Vermont military historians looking for him and I hoped that some of the Stanton researchers in that are could also help. Thanks for any assistance you might be able to provide.
