Hello to everyone I have been on this list just a very short time. I am a newbie as far as the net is concerned but I have worked in genealogy for about nine years. My STANTON line has proven to be the most elusive of all. I know a lot more about this line than I do about other lines but it seems to be a game of hide and seek. I know nothing about their Irish origins and, of course, this is not an unusual problem. But a rarer problem is where did they all go? With the exception of my grandfather John STANTON who was born in 1862 in Vermont probably near Rutland and who died in Boston , Mass in late 1944 everyone else can not be found in any census after 1870 Rutland. I do not recognize them if they do appear. Of course one of the challenges has been Canadian censuses,my lack of real knowledge of Canadian geography, and maybe also a deliberate privacy policy practiced by this family. This game started between the STANTONS and me when they first migrated from Ireland in 1843 through the port of NYC. They stated that their destination was NYC and I believed them. After a few years search in New York I managed to trace them to Scarborough Ontario Canada. This is today the city of Toronto.I can see my grandfather's amusement. He was the only ancestor I had who I really got to know. I asked all kinds of questions but never made any headway. James STANTON SR was born on Ireland @ 1808. His wife Isabella @1812. All the children were listed. There was an outsider, maybe a nanny accompanying them whose first name was illegible but whose surname was GALBRAITH.The children ranged in ages from 14 to 18months old.The oldest was Thomas born around 1829 and the youngest Christopher who may have been born @1841. I am told that this was around the time Ireland began centralizing birth records. If this is so and I had any connections in Ireland maybe I could trace the family this way. If anyone has tried this let me know how this was done. Please! There was a Bridget, Mary Ann, John,Michael, and James STANTON JR. born 1833. Jamed would be my great grandfather. This James does appear in the Vermont 1870 census with his wife Bridget BARRY and their children. My grandfather John was their first child. Most of the children were born in Canada. She was pregnant at this time with another James. He and my grandfather were the only ones born in the USA. I feel quite certain but don't have any real evidence that they were born in Scarborough,Canada. If I can remind you the family merely passed through NYC in 1843. They immediately went to Canada. To get back to the family aboard ship to USA in 1843. One child Bridget, a sister of James STANTON JR and child of James STANTON SR married an Arthur McGINNIS who can be found with his wife Bridget McGINNIS nee STANTON.in Castleton near Rutland 1870 census. What happened to this family? I know my grandfather John did relocate eventually to Worcester and Boston Massachusetts I never found out about the rest of them. I would like to know where they came from in Ireland. I suspect that some if not all of them relocated somewhere in Canada. They did not stay in the Toronto area I think but can not tell for sure. Thanks in advance for listening. Muriel C. Allen e-mail mural4321@earthlink.net They have the same family birth pattern
