None of those names appear in the Wm Stanton book. For Thopmas of CT, not obviously. There are a couple of Williams, one b.19 Jan. 1822, the other 17 Mar. 1827, who are possibles based on the dates you gave. There's no marriage or offspring info on either of them, so can't say one way or t'other. I do not know if my Stantons is from this Thomas Stanton because I do not know any further back on the linage. My Sarah was born in Alabama. Martha Steakley
Hello All, I did not realize what a fire storm of replies one could get from a simple posting of STANTON Relatives - Where are you????!!!!! "The Book" that I am referring to is: A RECORD, Genealogical, Biographical, Statistical, of THOMAS STANTON, OF CONNECTICUT, and HIS DESCENDANTS 1635 - 1891 By WILLIAM A. STANTON, Ph. D., D. D. ALBANY , N.Y. Joel Munsell's Sons, Publishers 1891 NOTE: The above is printed on the inside page of the book, the original book measured about 6 x 8" and it is 613 pages long - but when I copied it - I put two pages on one piece of paper. If anyone has questions, please send me a post (Brian - what did you get me into.) I will answer all of you as I can. Take Care. MFIELDS155@AOL.COM
I am descendant from Sarah Thomas Stanton who married John Melton Varnell. She was born March 1859 to William Olen Stanton And Mary Margaret Wilson. She had a brother named Asbury. Is this family in the Stanton Book? Any one else out there researching this line? I do not know William or Mary Margaret's parents name or their siblings Martha Varnell Steakley
Hello All, The List has been pretty quiet for awhile - are you still out there!!!! If anyone is interested in the Stanton Book, please contact me - I have a copy of the original book and am in the process of finding someone who can copy it for us at a reasonable price. I want the shop who does the work for us to print on acid-free paper and to three hole punch it. I will reply to the List as soon as I find a good copy shop and get some idea of what the postage would be for the book and a shipping box. Thank you for allowing me to visit with you, Take Care. The Stanton book doesn't have any Malachin in it. Let us know what years we are taking about and the location. Thanks!
MY ggrandmother was Sarah Thomas (Sallie) Stanton born march 1859. Her parents were William Olen Stanton and Mary Margaret Wilson. Sarah had a brother named Asbury. I do not have any information on this line prior to this. Is anyone else working on this line or have any information about it? Would love to hear from "cousins" Martha Steakley
I came across this information in The Complete Book of Emigrants, Vol III covering 1661-1699 by Wilson Coldham, GPC, Baltimore MD 1992. It is an entry extracted from "English Adventurers and Emigrants 1661-1733" and says --- 11 November 1661-24 February 1662. Depositions re the voyage of the White Dove, Mr. Thomas Stanton, from London to Barbados, but intending for Virginia, in 1658/9 with passengers including Stephen Pett, Robert Hendray, David Griffith, and Richard Merriman. Is he at all related to Thomas Stanton of Stonington? Brian Mavrogeorge www.genealogysf.com mavrogeorge@genealogysf.com
I got my copy of the Stanton book from my cousin Marge. She told me this week she still has the original pages from which my copy was made and perhaps others would be interested in a copy of the book. The book is about 620 pages long so it would probably cost about less than $40 to copy and mail (loose hole-punched pages, no binder). Is there any interest in rootsweb land for this? If there is I will ask Marge to figure out exact costs and we can let people know. For sure it will be less than the $100 quoted from the book reseller. Karen, Already in the process. I have been waiting for a researcher in West Virginia who travels to DC once a week to get back to me. He hasn't so NATF form 80 is my next logical step. Probably should have tried it 6 months ago but didn't know you could request it on the net until recently. I have a thing about licking stamps I guess. Thanks to everyone who responded, but I am still hoping someone might recognize Thomas N. Stanton or have info on William P. Stanton. Denny Shirer Shirer Family Genealogy Project http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Village/1485
Hi Denny and all - I hesitate to suggest this, because you have probably already done it, but you may obtain Civil War military and pension records by filling out government NATF form 80 and sending it to General Reference Branch (NNRGP) National Archives and Records Administration, 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW., Washington, DC. 20408. The forms may be also obtained by requesting them over the internet. I don't know the website address, but any good search mechanism could find it by asking for the National Archives. You do not send payment until and unless they find something. As with anything to do with the govenment, it takes time, but I have been very successful in the past using this method of obtaining Civil War records. The pension papers are particularly helpful for genealogical purposes. Karin Goudy
Karen and all, I sure will put that correction on my site and also any other corrections anyone can supply with source to back it up. There is a price for admission though. As I have not really linked my Stanton ancestor with any Stanton lineage yet I am again asking for any help the rest of you might be able to supply. (the price I talked about) My ancestor is Thomas N. Stanton, b. circa 1835. Where I don't know. He lived in Newark, OH just prior to the war and had a son Owen Foster Stanton 8/12/1858 in Newark, OH d. 3/10/1920 in Newark, OH. by his wife Elizabeth ?. She might have died giving birth to their second son August which I also have no date of death. They might have died together or close together as August does not show up on any census records. Thomas served as Master at Arms aboard the ironclad ship The Benton, flagship to Admiral Porter and part of the Mississippi Squadron. They took part in many battles among them being the siege of Vicksburg. I have a letter he wrote to Owen giving him a powder horn taken from the burned remains of Joseph Davis' plantation, older brother to Jefferson Davis. I also have the powder horn. When he returned from the war, he must have seen that Owen was being taken care of and left to seek his fortune. Owen shows up in the 1870 census as living with the Nathan English family. Thomas was known to return periodically for family events such as my grandparents wedding. I have no idea where he died or when. I found a box in the Ohio Historical Society that was supposed to contain all the service records for those serving in the Navy from Ohio in the the Civil War, but there was no mention of him. I have been trying to recruit anyone who has access to the national archives for a lookup of his service record and or pension record, but keep getting promises and have even contacted a professional researcher but no one has come through yet. I was just kidding about the price, but it's been a while since I posted this and I've seen some new faces and thought someone might be able to help. I would love to connect to some Stanton line, and if I had to bet it would be Robert's but until I connect all I will put on my site is access to the book and any corrections anyone is willing to submit. I haven't heard from anyone on Dr. William P. Stanton of Coshocton, OH. who is a possible father to Thomas. (By the way Thomas' mother's name might be Isabella.) How about a helping hand. This mystery has plagued our family for almost 70 years. Denny Shirer Shirer Family Genealogy Project http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Village/1485
Robert Hook writes below --- Yes please use what info you can. And, if you would like, send in the information to extend the Stanton lines on the pages down to you. Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: Robert C. Hook [mailto:r.hook@worldnet.att.net] Sent: Sunday, June 27, 1999 9:22 PM To: mavrogeorge@genealogysf.com Subject: + 15 xi. Joseph Goodhue was born 1687 Brian, I believe that is your name. I found your family history tonight and determined that I am a 7th great grandson of your Joseph Goodhue that was born in 1687. Joseph married June 5, 1708 to Sarah Smith of Ipswich, MA. They had 8 children, of which the first was George Goodhue who was born August 8, 1709. I had also determined that William Goodhue had married Margery Watson but did not know of Mary Webb or Remember Fisk. I would like your permission to include their names and dates in my records.
I think it is very generous of Mr. Shirer to put "Our Ancestors the Stantons," by William Henry Stanton on his web site. I have a correction to the book. Stanton says that the Catherine Stanton who married Isaac White is the daughter of Henry Stanton, the first to go to NC. She is however, the daughter of Henry Stanton II and his first wife, Alice Borden. This was a marriage of first cousins and was not listed in the Quaker records, but I have enoughdocumentation to satisfy myself that it occurred. If you wish this correction and documentation, please contact me. I have made this correction to Mr. Shirer and believe he will eventually include it on his web site. Karin Goudy

John, That's a great bibiliography. Thanks for listing it. Forewarning on Higginson. It took me about six months to get my order, although they did not charge it to my credit card until the order was complete. They really are photocopies, notes and all. The pages have ink spots on them (printer, not previous owner) and many are printed crooked and with varying margins. Bound well, but printing is not great quality. That being said, I'm delighted to have the actual books (FINALLY!). One county history was originally published in 1857 and has several names underlined in ink...they were my family names! Very weird feeling that the previous owner was connected to my family!
