Hi all, Many thanks for the prompt replies and excellent info. The info I have on Lucy Jane Taylor is as follows;- A birth certificate b. 6 Mar 1880 in Short Heath, Willenhall to Samuel Taylor (Coal Miner) and Maria Taylor (formerly Lees) 1881 Census Ann M Taylor 28 (Maria?), Samuel Taylor Son aged 4 both living with a George and Jane Farmer in Short Heath, Willenhall (lodger Edward Appleby, single) Note wife's name. 1891 census A Lucy Taylor living with George (58) and Jane (56) Farmer in Little Bloxwich aged 11, Niece (Lodger Edward Appleby (54), single) 1897 Marriage Certificate Marriage to my Grandfather, Charles Percy Lloyd, (b. Peter Charles), at the Registrar office in Walsall. Both are down as aged 21?? (Witness to this is a Jane Appleby, more later) Lucy's father is down as Samuel Taylor, Coal Miner, she living in Church Street, Bloxwich. 1901 Census Edward (Head 64) and Jane (Wife 65) Appleby living in Church Street, Bloxwich with Charles Lloyd (Son in Law), Lucy J Lloyd (Daughter) with Francis Lloyd and Sydney Lloyd both down as Grandsons. 1911 Census Edward (73) and Jane (75) Appleby living in Woodhall Street, Bloxwich, (Close to Church St) with visitors, Horace Lloyd, (my Father) and Ethel Lloyd (my aunt) My thoughts are as follows. The Ann M Taylor fit's in with Steve's info for the 1881census. But why is Lucy down as niece in the 1891, is George or Jane the Uncle or Aunt. I think the lodger may have married Jane between 1891 and 1901 but I can't find a marriage certificate at present. But how are Charles and Lucy down as Son in Law and Daughter in 1901? There was obviously a connection with the Appleby family for my father and aunt to be staying with them in 1911. Any thoughts to how this all fits would be much appreciated. Many thanks Trev
Just one thought. My ggrandfather was illegitimate (which I am not suggesting was the case here but bear with me). It appears that his mother could neither make the father (who is named on the birth cert) marry her nor did she receive any maintenance. Perhaps the father didn't actually exist (although I thought that they had to be present in order to be named on the cert? I digress) or died. In 1881 he was living with his uncle and his family as a visitor. In 1891 he is still with them but as their nephew. He married in 1897 naming his uncle as his father. I don't know if that was for appearances or whether he had been brought up to believe that his uncle was his father. His real mother died in 1915 and i have no idea whether she ever saw him. He was born with the same surname as his uncle so no changes to that were ever required. On another side of my family a gx3 grandfather (surname Vallance) appeares to have married and had children. By 1841 he has disappeared and his wife is living with a man called Gibbs and although she has retained the surname Vallance her children are recorded as his children with the surname Gibbs. Some of them even continue to use this surname when they marry etc even though I cannot find any evidence that she married Gibbs. My (rather longwinded) point is that sometimes families used surnames and relationships to suit their circumstances and sometimes a situation may have existed for so long that no-one knew any different. Do you know when Lucy's real parents died? hth - although it might not! :-) Anne > From: trev@trevlloyd.co.uk > To: STAFFORDSHIRE@rootsweb.com > Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2012 11:07:19 +0000 > Subject: [STAFFORDSHIRE] The Taylor saga > > Hi all, > Many thanks for the prompt replies and excellent info. > > > > The info I have on Lucy Jane Taylor is as follows;- > >
