Hi Listers, I'm trying to track down my SKELDON/SKELTONs in Staffordshire: does anyone have anybody of this name in their tree? My earliest connection is Thomas SKELTON (b.c. 1790 - d. after 1820) who married Sarah BUTLER (1793-?). His son was Thomas SKELTON, born about 1820 in Tipton. It might be that Thomas and Sarah were not married... The family subsequently moved to Derbyshire and, in my line Lincolnshire thence the Isle of Wight, but its origins seem to be in Staffordshire and any help would be most appreciated! Thanks, Will
Hello Will, I have a transcript of the St Martin, Tipton PR. C1736-1812 where the surname SKELTON is variously spelled SKELDIN, SKELDING, SKELDON, SKELETON, SKELTON - the surname SHELDON is particularly prevalent, which could be a possible corruption of SKELDON. Afraid I cannot see a baptism for a Thomas SKELTON + vars circa 1790 at St Martin. Will, Looking at IGI baptisms there are children baptised in Deptford, Lewisham, Rotherhithe, Shoreditch, Leigh and Tipton. So there seem to be three or four couples producing children. Yet I can find only two recorded marriages with Thomas Skelton and Sarah combinations, neither of which is yours. So my guess is that records have either not been indexed, not survived or that they didn't marry. You say they moved to Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Isle of Wight. Can you cite some evidence as there are no BDM or census records? I'm assuming they did not live to 1851 where census might show their birthplace. Even 1841 might show in or out of county. If you are simply looking for related researchers the place to look is submitted trees and surname lists. But it would be hard for anybody to get back that far, as like you, they would also struggle with lack of records. Peter
