    3. Bill, Many thanks for allowing me to look at Matthew Meddings in your tree, I can't see a connection to mine at the moment but it is possible. Your idea of the Bassetts visiting relatives in 1861 is probably right, they may not have got there in time for any recording of their details. I do understand that it was a chapelry of St Peter's, Stoke at that time. However Genuki says that "The register of St John, Longton, commences in 1764." I have tried all the suggestions you made but it was a while ago, so maybe it is time to have another go. You should be able to at least find the marriages of both couples and then purchasing certificates should provide parents. Perhaps it's how you write it down. With over 25 years of experience I've learned to think this way. Daniel Bassett born c1819 Carmarthenshire, and Catherine .............. born c1817 Breconshire were married on ............ at ......................... Known children were Elizabeth b......... Mary b........... Leah b............... In 1841 census he was a ................ at.................. In 1851 census he was a ................ at.................. In 1861 census he was a ................ at.................. Etc, etc I'm looking for descendants / ancestors of .............. Similarly, John Meddings born 1840 Bridgnorth, Shrop and Emma ...............born 1839 in Wolverhampton were married on ............ at ......................... Known children were Jane b1874 John Henry b1877 I'm looking for deaths and .................... Looking at ages, both marriages should be on FreeBMD. I could find them, but I have a feeling you know them. Daniel & Catherine's origins may be a bit harder because of earlier dates but John & Emma should appear with parents in at least 1841 & 1851 census. You also need to make it clear if you are looking for births, deaths, ancestors or relatives. Hope this helps to get some better results. Peter ------------------------------ Hello Peter, I appreciate your reply - I possibly didn't make my details clear. I have the marriage certificate of Daniel and Catherine Bassett nee Williams and also their death certificates and where they are buried. I of course know their parents from these. I have the census records from 1841/1851/71/81 and know where they are living on those dates. 1861 for Daniel, Catherine and their children I can't find and I would like to know whether they were still in Wales at that time, I feel that they were but without proof I can't be sure. 1891 census is a mystery for me as regards to Daniel as he was alive until 1895. His youngest daughter Leah Bassett was my gt. Grandmother. I have her birth, marriage and death certificates, and again I have her burial record - however I have looked for her on the 1881 census when she was married to William Banner and have not been able to find her either in the Stoke on Trent, West Bromwich areas and even in Wales just in case they were visitors to relatives, so this is another case of really wanting to know where they were at that time. I know that most of the Bassetts were ironworkers at the Iron and Steel works locally and until they moved to Staffordshire were generations of Welsh people. William Banner was a miner. Regarding John and Emma Meddings(nee Armstrong) I have their birth, marriage and death certificates and where they are buried. I have had a bit of difficulty in locating them on the 1861 census as they didn't marry until 1862, but having looked at the 1861 differently I think that I have found them and neither of them were living with their parents at that time. It is the 1881 census again that I find frustrating as I have tried to think of different ways and ideas of looking but still no luck. Meddings as a name isn't that common and could be spelled in different ways. I have been very lucky in the sense that I am in touch with members of both families, but it appears that we are all looking at the same brick walls. Once again Peter, many thanks to you. A daughter Mary also had a son James (no father given) 1866, Abersychan/Pontypool. They had other children, the youngest being Leah born 1851. 1871 census they had moved to the Stoke on Trent area, and remained there. Catherine died in 1888 and Daniel in 1895, they are buried in Hanley Cemetery. However, I can find no record of Daniel on the 1891 census. 1881 - Leah is married to William Banner and is also living in the Stoke on Trent area, as William was born in West Bromwich I have looked there in case they were visiting his relatives, but again I haven't been able to find them. 1881 JOHN AND EMMA MEDDINGS and their children - John was born Bridgnorth, Shropshire 1840 and Emma in Wolverhampton 1839 but moved to Stoke on Trent area middle/late 1870's with their older children who were all born in Wolverhampton. However, their daughter Jane born 1874 and my grandfather John Henry born 1877 were born in Stoke on Trent. I have looked in Wolverhampton in case this family were visiting relatives. I know that the Medddings name has been written in various ways - i.e., Middins/Meddin/Meadin, and probably others, I have tried all of them. I would appreciate any help at all on these queries, my thanks in advance. The way to go is look for the couple in 1871 census to get their birthplaces and then look for them with parents in 1851 and 1861.
