Have you looked for any Wills relating to your BAKER family, Margaret? These are held at Lichfield Record Office. Wills have often proved very useful in my own researches, and you never know, even the most humble of folk made Wills! I believe there were non-conformists chapels in and around Cannock at that time. I believe these records might actually be held at Cannock Library! Also look for other records such as Parish Law records. Stafford do have indices indicating what records they hold for each Staffordshire parish - I believe you can also search for these using SRO's online database - but am not 100% certain. You have probably already got these but I have extracted some of the BAKER details from the St Michael, Penkridge parish register for you, which I thought may be relevant: Bapt: 19th Sept 1823 James son of Robert and Mary BAKER. Labourer and again on the 12 Oct 1823! 23 Jan 1825 Anne dau of Andrew and Elizabeth BAKER. Labourer. Marriage: 25 August 1793 Robert BAKER husbandman & Ann WALLOMS, spinster. With regards to Linda's suggestion, no, I hadn't thought about non conformist baptisms. I didn't think there were any in Penkridge because the Methodist Church was not built until I was three years old. I can just remember it being built. Before that time I have always understood that everyone except Catholics were baptised at St. Michael and All Angels Church. Also at that time except for the Infants School all schools were Church of England endowed by Lord Hatherton. I agree with you Peter that Ann was illegitimate, and I have also presumed that one of her Grandparents children was her parent but I have been unable to confirm this. Just for information there was at that time no RC Church at Penkridge either, the nearest one being at Brewood. Thanks again.
