Hi. The above was the husband of my grandmother's sister, Mabel Hall, and they emigrated to Alberta, Canada. Richard was the son of Richard and Etnily ( yes, that's her stated name) Ellis, of Hanley. I have found the family in the 1916 census of Canada, which states that Richard immigrated in 1911, and Mabel in 1912. Their son Thomas was 2 in the census, and was born in Alberta. Richard was 32 and Mabel 28. They lived in Forest Lawn. I have been unable to find any information about Richard's parents, or his marriage to Mabel. I cannot find the parents in the UK 1881 census. What I have discovered on the CWGC website is that Richard was killed in France on 16 September 1916, age 32. As he was home for the census on 1 June that year, his military career was sadly very short. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Keith in NZ.
Keith, Logically, if he was born 1884 and migrated to Canada in 1911, he won't be in 1881 UK census but should be in 1891, 1901 and 1911. Have you looked there? You say you can't find data on his parents, yet you seem categoric that his mother was Etnily. I'd suggest that's been mistranscribed. It could be Emily. Why Staffordshire? You haven't indicated. Assuming it's correct there is a marriage of Richard Ellis to Emma Alcock in 1879. Might be worth following them through the census records. Son Richard is registered 1884 in Wolstanton. Can't help with a Canadian marriage. It may be on Ancestry. But perhaps they never married or perhaps it was in UK before he left. Peter
Hi, would any of our Canadian listers be able to identify an address from the 1916 census entry details please? Township: 24 Province: Alberta District: 34 Calgary East (possibly Forest Lawn) Sub district: 04 Enumeration District: 24 Family number: 99 Page:8 Names: R T Ellis, Mabel Ellis, Thomas Ellis. The information also states that Richard immigrated in 1911, his wife Mabel in 1912. I am trying to find their marriage, as they were both single in the UK 1911 census. I cannot find it in the FREEBMD indices either, so I don't know whether they married in Alberta or Staffs. Their only child was 2 in the 1916 census. Richard was KIA in September 1916. I would appreciate an indication as to where I can look up their immigration details, they don't appear to be on the Ellis Island site. They would probably have left England from Liverpool. Thanks very much, Keith NZ

Keith, I did this quickly, so you might like to check. 1891 census has a Thomas Ellis born 1884 living in Burslem with parents Richard & Emma and other siblings. Ages seem to match the 1879 marriage of Richard Ellis and Emma Alcock. I've seen first and second given names interchanged frequently so when mum calls the kids the husband doesn't think he's in trouble. But as I said, you need to also check 1901 and 1911. Peter
