    3. That's the long s you have described. It faded from use round 1860 but was very common before that - and was a few centuries before used for all s, not just the first of the double s. They have MOSS spelled "MO" and then some crazy looking "S" which looks a lot like a cursive "F", and then they have a normal "S" for the second one. Weird. Also a lot of people have said that MOSS and MORSE were mixed up, or swapped around, so that's something for me to consider as well.
