The general rule is - start with yourself and work back. doing things the other way is NOT a good idea, generally! I have tried finding descendants from my ancestors on down to our time, now I think I'll try it the other way around. The only one on that side who I know (only emailed twice, never seen or spoke with them) lives far across the country from me, so getting some of the documents may be tricky. I've emailed; but they had a death in their family recently and haven't gotten back to me yet beyond telling me that. I'll keep at it day by day. Thanks again. Michael, following on from my message yesterday, I am beginning think as others obviously are, that you are trying to work forwards rather than backwards. You really must start with what you know...yourself and your parents, and work backwards, generation by generation from there. If you are now working on a branch of your family which you have researched correctly by going back in time, say a sibling of a gg grandparent etc., only then can you work forwards in time, but for your own ancestors, you MUST work backwards always! Also, as has been pointed out, sometimes it takes years to find a particular person! The main thing I learned was that they only make themselves shown to you when they are good and ready, then they will tap you on the shoulder and say "Come find me, I am now ready to be found!" lol I have just found a family whom I have been searching for in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census for 15 years! I know I had their details right as I traced them back through the Parish Registers to 1770, and I found them in the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census, but they seemed to have completely disappeared in the earlier three decades. The family always baptised every child with the middle name of Smith so, my gg grandmother was Eliza Smith Ashworth, her father George Smith Ashworth etc. etc. Just last week I found them by tracing a person who married into the family but who was widowed within two years of his marriage, there in the 1851 census all living together, but my family listed under the surname Smith, NOT Ashworth! Likewise, I then found them in 1841 and 1861, also enumerated under the names of Smith. Following that I came across a record in the Old Bailey where one of them was a witness in a case of theft on the Docks in London where he worked, and he swore that his name was John Smith Ashworth, but commonly known as John Smith! Why, for 3 decades they went under the name Smith, yet married and baptised all their children under the name Smith Ashworth I will probably never know, but it shows you should never give up searching! All this is far more exciting than if it was all there in front of our noses to just copy it. That's what family history is all about....the detective work and the thrill when you find something you have searched for for years and years and years! Very true indeed. I need to remember to find joy in the journey. Sometimes I just wish more ancestors would tap me on the shoulder. :D I actually have worked from me back to my ancestors; but came to a dead end fairly soon on one of my lines (Sarah ____ born in 1795), so that's the one I've tried to find for so long. Then I felt that some of her ancestors must have some keepsakes, or journals, or letters or something that would help me learn more, which is why I decided to go backwards. I guess that didn't work.
