    3. Hello I am trying to get details of the marriage of Charles Harry Thorley to Elizabeth Ann Timmis and at which church it took place. It was on 20 May 1878 at Bucknall cum Bagnall. Was it at Bucknall church OR Bagnall church? The GRO Index just gives it as Stoke T. 6b 184. Can anyone help? Regards Graham Brealey

Staffs BMD gives more details than the GRO in that it names the church and also gives the register and page number. Regards Steve Stutcinskas

    3. This is a general question, and may be a bit much to handle by one person. Just wondering what sources we have to gather information from, and what the best way to find those sources is. I already know about some sources; but I'm not sure where I can get info on them. Birth Certificates: Parish records (though I guess I don't always know where they can be searched) Marriage Certificates: Parish records again Death Certificates: Parish records (who would have records of obituaries? And when did they start keeping them?) Census records: Many genealogical sites can search these (FamilySearch.org, Ancestry.com, FindMyPast.com) Wills: Not sure where to find these really. What other sources are out there? And where can I search or find them? Thanks. Michael Wright 801-773-7680 (H) 801-390-0960 (C) rahmuss@hotmail.com

    3. Hi Michael, Firstly I assume that we are talking UK records here - and possibly Staffs in particular? Personally my first port of call if I am unsure of where to find something is a search engine - my preference is for www.ask.com but I am slightly anti-google anyway! It's amazing what you can find from the smallest piece of info - I have found other researchers just from an ancestor's name and date. You can also find area specific websites from searches - some of which are brilliant. Equally you can search on something like 'staffordshire bmd' which will not only show you www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk (which is free) but will also provide links to findmypast, ancestry etc (which can be searched for free but you pay to view). www.freebmd.org.uk is also good, though incomplete, and includes links to sister sites http://www.freecen.org.uk/ and http://www.freereg.org.uk/. BMD certificates only started in 1837 so you won't find any before this date. To order a cert (ideally once you know the reference details) use the GRO site - this has links to it and a few other sites http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Researchingfamilyhistory/index.htm. Online parish clerks exist for various UK parishes http://www.onlineparishclerks.org.uk/ but unfortunately not yet for Staffs. Parish records on microfiche etc are available at local libraries/research centres etc and also can be ordered to view at Family Search centres - this is the old site with link to the new one http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp. There is loads of info on the site regarding where to obtain records and how to research. It can be worth joining the local family history society as you may get access to records not widely available http://www.ffhs.org.uk/members2/contacting.php. Censuses - 1881 transcription is free on familysearch.org. All of the others are available on ancestry, findmypast, and the official 1901 and 1911 sites. All of these charge for viewing the actual page though you may get some info from the free search. Censuses are also available on fiche, film etc at libraries etc. Just check you local one to see what's available (although I'm guessing you're not in the UK?). National Archives has details of some records - or details of where to find them http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/. Again you may have to pay (e.g. armed services records). Just search on a name or other piece of info. Wills I'm not well informed about as I have rarely searched for one (most of my lot were ag labs with nothing to leave to anyone!). National Archives or Ancestry both hold some details - again you may have to pay. Not sure what else - I'm sure others on the list will have more ideas. hth,Anne > From: rahmuss@hotmail.com > To: staffordshire@rootsweb.com > Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2012 13:12:06 -0600 > Subject: Re: [STAFFORDSHIRE] Sources > > > This is a general question, and may be a bit much to handle by one person.
