Grate blacker - I suspect it is called stove black here. When you can find it, that is. Like hens teeth these days. Sort of like bootpolish texture - the stuff you brush on not the liquid self shining apply with a sponge applicator on the top of the bottle sort - brush it on, lots of elbow grease, and the stove comes up well. They used to do it every week or so.. I have done it once - partly due to the lack of stove black! Filthy stuff it is, women ware black aprons to do it so the inevitable mess on clothes did not show.
