    3. HiI have a question to ask, I have been search for this family a long time but I still am not in the country and have not had a lot of experience so please excuse any thing that I may not consider. I have recently used a free subscription to Ancestry add finally found some records to search through for a marriage to Thomas GOSS to a Sarah in about 1836, as that is what year the only child I know of was born. James GOSS the child was born in Uttoeter. My question is could a marriage to a Thomas GOUGH and a Sarah HUXLEY in 1834 in Prees, Shropshire, England be a reasonable consideration as a possible marriage of this couple and a possible starting point for other references ie the census, their births even other trees? Any advice or suggestions would help tremendously. Thanks in advance. Theresa

    3. It's possible. However, if you know the name GOSS is for sure how it's been spelled, even back in the 1800s, and you have seen the actual marriage record with the spelling of GOUGH, then it's not as likely. If you haven't seen GOUGH on the actual marriage record; but instead simply a transcription of the marriage record, then it's possible. That's just my own opinion, and there could be some reason why GOUGH would have been changed to GOSS, or is maybe interchangable (at least back then) with GOSS. 3. You start from what you know and work backwards, Theresa. ie 1) Find the family on the 1851 census. This will tell you the names of children, and the birth places of everyone, plus their ages. 2) Using that information, obtain a birth certificate for one of the children of Thomas and Sarah born after 1837! This will also give you Sarah's maiden name. 3) Only then will you be able to accurately discover where Thomas and Sarah married. But be aware that pre civil registration marriages do not give the names of the bridal couples parents. 3. Theresa, Could I suggest you post known names, dates and locations of the person you're looking for and where you found that data. We could probably find dozens of Thomas Goss / Gough marriages with wife Sarah and lots of births for James. We need secondary data to qualify. And quite often it's easy to accept the first one you find. And being around the critical date of 1837, it depends if you are looking in Parish Records or Civil Registrations. Peter
