Dear listerv members Posted with the permission of the list owner: We are pleased to announce that the indexes to the Stafford Gaol photograph albums, 1877-1916, are now available on the Staffordshire Name Indexes website, thanks to the work of the Staffordshire Record Office Volunteer Group. Stafford Gaol housed not only prisoners convicted at Staffordshire Quarter Sessions and other courts in Staffordshire, but also prisoners from across the midlands and northern England, on their way to penal servitude in well-known prisons such as Dartmoor, Portland and Parkhurst. The albums contain photographs of over 7,000 different prisoners. Unfortunately not all prisoners were photographed, and some of the albums have not survived, but they may provide the only available portrait of your criminal ancestor .... well, I guess most of have at least one! Why not check it out at www.staffsnameindexes.org.uk. You can order copies of the photographs if you find an entry in the index.
