Dear all, A friend recently acquired an envelope and letter at an antiques event. It caught his eye due to the link with Staffordshire. The letter was sent from an address in Littleborough, now in Greater Manchester, to the home of a Mrs Shotton who lived in Cresswell Staffordshire. Perhaps we can allow ourselves a grim smile as we read it now. Regards, Steve July 21st 1912 Dear Sister & Brother, I am sorry to inform you that I found father dead in bed this morning when I got up. He was his usual state of health last night at 11 o'clock. I got up this morning as usual came downstairs to make him his porridge when I took them up I found him dead. The doctor seems to think that he had been dead all night. I wish you would come as soon as possible if convenient as there are only me and our Emma. We are thinking of burying him on Wednesday as he is going very black, the undertaker seems to think that he wont keep any longer. So I think this is all at present. Your loving sisters Jane & Emma

Mrs Shotton is Mary Hannah nee Drake born 1869 The unfortunate father is William Drake born 1847, his wife Drusilla's death is recorded in the June Qtr 1911 aged 65. I have calculated that 21st July 1912 was a Sunday.
