Hi Barbara, Have a look on Staffordshire BMD for 1842 and it will give you the refernce number and you can either send a letter  or phone  Newcastle-under Lyme register office and it will cost approx £10 plus postage.  I think William may have been living with his grandparents on the 1851 census.
