Theresa, Here are confirmation of the two children's baptisms (source Ancestral Archives PR Transcripts of Norbury & Roston Derbyshire): 30 August 1868 at Norbury Thomas Heywood Broughton GOSS son of James & Sarah, Gamekeeper, Roston 3 July 1870 at Norbury William Henry GOSS son of James & Sarah, Gamekeeper, Roston Given the two other forenames of eldest son Thomas, it is interesting to note that a Clement BROUGHTON was Rector of the parish of Norbury and had 12 children baptised between 1844 & 1868. Also 2 HAYWOOD baptisms in the 1850's of children to a Thomas & Margaret of Dove Leys, Rocester who was shown as Esquire - could James perhaps have worked for him in some capacity. Conjecture, I know, but the forenames of Heywood & Broughton are interesting! The baptism shown on IGI Family Search for James at Uttoxeter on 19 July 1837 is an extracted one and should therefore be pretty reliable. However, I cannot find James on census records prior to 1871 nor can I find a Thomas & Sarah GOSS with any certainty using both Ancestry & FMP. Family Search also show the baptism in September 1833 at Uttoxeter of a Miriam GOSS to Thomas & Sarah - perhaps another avenue for you to explore. I think your best bet would be to look at the Uttoxeter parish registers to see if you can find other traces of your Thomas & Sarah GOSS. Either parent may have died and, if Thomas did, Sarah may have remarried and any children could be listed under her new married name which might explain the lack of them in earlier census records. Your nearest LDS Family History Centre should be able to order the appropriate microfilm for you for a small charge and you can then look through for any GOSS mentions. Janet Thanks for your help so far. Just a bit mpre so you know where I am coming from. I have found James GOSS birth reg in Uttoxeter, father Thomas GOSS mother Sarah no surname listed. I also have found census,1871 and 1881 married with his own family he immigrated to Canada 1882-3 I have not been able to find a Staffordshire census with Thomas, Sarah and James together and I don't know which direction to go next. James was a game keeper amd it is said that his father was as well, I have no proof on the father but I do with James as he is listed as such on the census. Thanks again. Theresa
Theresa, For what it's worth. I Googled " Goss + gamekeeper " and found the following reference 1842 mercury northampton newspaper index BURGESS REUBEN RUSHDEN WELLINGBOROUGH PETTY SESSIONS J. GOSS, GAMEKEEPER TO C. HILL ESQ., CHARGED REUBEN HILL, THOMAS ... www.familyhistorynorthants.co.uk/1842.html There are a number of people charged with gamekeeping offences by John Goss. Another with a serious assault on John Goss. But when I look at 1841 census there is no John Goss. There are however three John GROSS. It may be worth checking these out. There is also a death of John Gross in 12/1846 at Brixworth which is near Wellingborough. Could it be that he died and his wife remarried and children are shown with the surname of their stepfather. That would explain why they can't be found. Sorry. I don't have the time to check out every possibility. Peter
