Once again thanks to all for your great assistance, now it has given me a new quarry. Would this information have me think that GORSE is the original spelling of this name or would it mean that it was spelled buy those particular registrar's that way? The GOSS name as we know it is often misspelled even in this day and age people like to read r's that aren't there into the pronunciation. I had tried all my usual suspects on my search but was not able to think of this one. I have found it spelled with the "e" on the end I am wondering if it could have been transcribed incorrectly from that spelling, any opinions excepted:)Theresa
The spellings of names were written by who ever was doing the writing, with regional accents, the Parish Clerk or the Census Enumerator would spell the name as it sounded to them, the family would have been illiterate most probably so they wouldn't know how their name was spelt either! HTH Linda.
