Some non-conformists did not "do" baptisms - not infant ones anyway. Look throughout their lives, not just for dates near births,. And, accept they ay not every have been baptized. All were born in the Hanley/ Stoke/Newcastle area but I have not been able to find any of their baptisms. Can anyone please tell me if they are on-line anywhere, and maybe explain why they do not appear in the non-conformist records on Family Search? I would love to find these for my records. Your problem is that some or most of the non-conformist records were only filmed up to Civil Registration.I checked the Stoke on Trent Wesleyan records on FamilySearch and they filmed them from 1813 to 1837. I too have had the same problem in researching in Lancashire. I couldn't find a birth on Civil Registration and tried for a Baptizim at the family's Wesleyan Methodist Church but found that after Civil Registration in 1837 they didn't film the records after that date . These were the Baptizims of my Mother , her seven brothers and sisters and my Grandfather. I have a picture of the church(now gone to the wrecking ball) and on the back it tells that this is the church where the Aldred children were baptized. Good luck. The ones I am interested in were Wesleyan/Methodist but thanks for pointing this out Dawn. Maybe it applied to Wesleyans too, although why so many non-conformist records on Family Search? Surely some must have been Methodist/Wesleyans who were in very large numbers? Or maybe I have got it wrong! I found this - it is American though I do not think it makes much difference in this. Re Wesleyan Methodists. The Free Methodist Church of North America believes water baptism is commanded by Jesus Christ to signify acceptance of the benefits of the atonement of Jesus Christ. They believe Baptism is to be administered to believers, as declaration of their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior. They believe Baptism is a symbol of the new covenant of grace. They believe infants may be baptized since they are recognized as being included in the atonement. The parents or guardians must assure proper Christian training for the infant since they are not able to affirm the vows for themselves. Note the use of MAY when it talks about infant baptism. Could be interpreted as yes and no, and it may depend a bit on the local congregation and pastor!
