I'm trying to find William POINTON (born 1876) travelling to the US in 1901-1910. His father, also William, went in May 1902, on the 'Majestic', captained by Edward Smith, and according to the Ellis Island Arrivals site, William junior arrived on 10 January 1903 on the 'Germanic', also captained by Edward Smith, travelling with his sister Emma, and her husband Tom WHITE. But Find My Past has no William POINTON on that sailing, and the relevant page of the manifest looks like a piece of hessian cloth, and so is illegible, although Find My Past tells me there's nothing wrong with it. Tom and Emma White are shown as being on the ship on that date (it left Liverpool on 31 December 1902). Can someone else who has a subscription to Find My Past have a look, please, in case it's my computer that's at fault? If he's there, what is the spelling? Thanks in advance, Graham
Graham on Ancestry it clear and the spelling is as you have it, but the "t" is not crossed so could be confused as a "b" or maybe an "l". Hope this helps. A big thank you to Bill, Dawn, Laurie and Diana for looking at this for me. I've now reported - again - to Find My Past that the page is faulty, adding that two of my correspondents agree with me. Now I know he's there on Ancestry, I've tried searching for William PAINTON, and lo and behold, there he is, described as a "sugar maker" (should be "saggar maker" - but I'll accept "sagar" from someone who wouldn't know what a saggar was). This is my tenuous connexion to the 'Titanic' - that some of my family travelled with the same captain earlier in the century. Graham, I have a question on your William Pointon b. about 1877 & his sister Emma b. about 1876. I could be wrong on their dates of births also. I have a brother & sister along with 6 other siblings belonging to Aaron Pointon & Rebekkah Simcock. Aaron b, 1850 Tamelly, South Wales Rebekkah Simcock b. 1847 Staffordshire Married 18 Aug, 1822 Norton in the Moors, Staffordshire. My grt-grt-grt grandmother was Matilday Plant married to John Simcock. they were my William & Emma & others, grandparents. Do you know if this is possibly the same brother & sister I have? Diana > >
I browsed the ship list and could not find him. Mind you I did not see his sister emma White nor her husband - not that I was looking for them, and I am in a rush to go out. However I did notice a couple of names crossed out and wonder if he could not have been on something like a "stand by" list and not included by accident on the pax list? My feeling is, he went as crew and then hopped off in NY, having worked his passage - he would not then have appeared on the passenger list. Sorry I can't help more. That page you see like a bit of hessian I saw too, and I suspect is just a cover page from a book or such. Dawn . I started research in 1958 and along the way in conversations many men joined as crew , no pay just food and signed off honourably in America or Australia .
