    3. Hello Kevin, Looking through the Parish Register transcripts of Alstonefield , there do not appear to be any MOSS baptisms or burials BUT there do appear to be a multitude of MOSS marriages. Listed below are what could be the relevant ones in your search for Abraham's parents: 11 November 1733 Isaac MOSS & Sarah SALT 15 August 1741 Elias MOSS & Sarah MILNER 7 May 1748 Abraham MOSS & Mary BRUNT 9 July 1751 John MOSS & Eliz. LOMAS 15 April 1755 Abraham MOSS & Mary GOODWIN in presence of Micah BENITT & Joseph HUDFIELD 24 August 1757 Jacob MOSS & Anne WARDLE of Hartington 3 May 1758 Luke MOSS & Mary LOMAS in presence of John MOSS & Geo LOMAS 13 September 1759 John MOSS & Kezia MOTTRAM in presence of Wm WOOD & Ezekiel WOOD 1 January 1765 Joseph MOSS & Eliz. BESWICK However, another clue for you may be via the National Burial Index which shows various burials at Quarnford, which is an ancient chapelry of Alstonefield, amongst which are several for an Abraham MOSS between 1762 & 1819, Elias MOSS between 1775 & 1824, Isaac MOSS between 1759 & 1823, John MOSS between 1759 & 1833 & Joseph MOSS 1762 & 1821 plus sundry wives and children presumably. All these burial names appear in the marriages which I have listed above so I am pretty certain that they did in fact live in Quarnford. The burials can be viewed on FMP which is a pay to view site. Given the strongly biblical forenames, could it be that the MOSS family were non-conformist which would explain why only the marriages appear in Alstonefield. Looking at one of the burials in more detail, it shows the burial of an Abraham MOSS on 26 October 1819 at Quarnford, aged 71, dedication at Flash Chapel. A Google search for Flash Chapel Quarnford states that it was built on half an acre of land in 1744 but that it was Church of England and the parish registers (Baptisms 1744-1847 & Burials 1744-1870) are deposited at Staffs Record Office, so it looks as if they did not perform marriages there which would explain why all the MOSS marriages were at Alstonefield. I'm afraid I can't help with Quarnford Baptisms or perhaps I can. Searching for Quarnford Parish Registers brings up the following site which might be helpful to you (www.hollinsclough.org.uk and click on Local History). It is not a complete list of the parish registers but only those residing at Hollinsclough, but there are several MOSS baptisms, etc amongst them the baptism of an Abraham MOSS on 6 December 1747 son of Elias & Sarah - might be a bit early for your Abraham but the site could be worth further investigation on your part as there is a lot more information other than the registers. Hope this helps Janet I have a marriage of Abraham MOSS to Elizabeth LAPTHORNE in Totnes, Devon in 1784. The marriage register entry states that Abraham was 'of Alstonfield, Staffordshire'. Whilst that doesn't mean he was born or baptised there, I would like to know if there is a baptism circa 1760, but possibly 1750 to 1763. I have no information regarding his age or parents' names, sorry. Still do not know when and where he died/was buried.

    3. Hi Janet I've been able to view transcriptions now and like you I find dozens of marriages and just two baptisms (much the same as on familysearch.org. The two most promising marriages are those for John in 1751 and Abraham in 1755, since the Abraham I'm looking for named his two sons John & Samuel. Interesting that there is no Samuel Moss in any of the marriages. I have the NBI 3 CD but it does not contain any MOSS burials for Devon. I don't think Abraham & Elizabeth would have moved north to Staffordshire, but then again I don't know that for sure. Their sons were born in Totnes in 1785 and 1786 and moved to Bristol via Somerset. Both remained in these areas until their deaths. I would love to locate burials for Abraham & Elizabeth. They would help narrow down birth years. Late here now so I'll pick this up in the morning. Thanks for your ideas. 3. Hi Janet The LDS site www.familysearch.org has several batches of baptisms for Quarnford and many MOSS ones amongst them. Sadly they are from 1795 onwards. I checked the Library Catalog and they only have Bishop's Transcripts from 1795 to 1856. All filmed. So not sure when baptisms commenced at Quarnford. I think you're on the right track though. I need to search surrounding parishes to find my Abraham's baptism, as it clearly didn't take place in St Peter, Alstonfield.
