Hi Mick, It is a poosibility but he would have been at least 34 by 1898 and had never been in the forces as far as we know. He would have been home by Nov 1902. We also know that my ggrandmother was 'lodging' with another man in 1901 - and both children born without a named father had this man's surname as their third name. This man died before my grandmother was born (she was the one born 1902) but she and her mother had continued to live in the same house where she was 'lodging' in 1901 after his death. Both children had my ggrandmother's married surname. Incidentally the man she was lodging with was also described as 'married' but I also cannot find his wife anywhere after 1891. Thanks for the suggestion but we have a fair idea what went on here!! cheers, Anne > From: mcallisterfamily@btinternet.com > To: staffordshire@rootsweb.com > Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2012 19:31:42 +0100 > Subject: Re: [STAFFORDSHIRE] Hugh Hughes > > Hi Anne et al, the reason father was absent could have been the Boer War, > 1898-1901.
